They come with a light mesh that goes around the filter and allows the dust, sand or whatever tiny particles that are picked up to stay in place. Theses filters last a long time and can even be washed! One big thing to remember...save the mesh that wraps around the filter. It needs to be removed and cleaned when you empty and clean the filter. When both are dry the mesh is supposed to go back on the filter. So keep them together. The mesh is cut in size to fit on the filter one way and has velcro to hold it in place. I had received the von haus vacuum from a friend and it had been neglected for so long. The filter needed to be changed out desperately and the entire vacuum sanitized. When using the vac, it did not suck as well; but i had expected it as the vacuum itself isn't powerful enough. After changing the filter, the vacuum did better cleaning my floors. The 3 pack was the best part of buying the filter. When i had opened the individual filters themselves, there is a velcro screen strapped around the filter. I didn't know if i was supposed to remove it or leave it. I just removed it and installed the filter. i didn't see a difference between the velcro screen on or off. Definitely don't know if it was another filter around the filter assembly.
