For my height of 5’2”, I adjusted the crutches to the shortest setting after carefully reading the instructions included on how to adjust & walk using them. When adjusted & used properly, the arm rest padding is more than adequate since you should not be putting any weight when walking on the arm rests. Secondly, the rubber tips have held up very well and seem very grippy. The only time I've lost traction was when I came in out of the rain and crutched across a granite tile floor. Eek, I nearly bit it! So be careful if you or the floor are wet. Otherwise, these puppies have gone across gravel, rocks, grass, dirt, etc with no issues at all. The rubber tips are a bit scratched and banged up, but are still completely intact. As far as the pads go, I can't really say. They're rubbery and seem like they'd be easy to hold, but I took the advice of other reviewers and ordered a set of crutch padding at the same time I ordered the crutches. The pads have made both the hand grips and the underarm grips as comfortable as they can be. It should be fine. I am 5' 9" and there was still a little room to adjust for height. 5'10" puts you right on the cusp of both sizes. I bought the tall ones, and discovered they came right up to my armpits, which crutches should not. I then bought the regular ones, and set them at nearly full length.
