If the person is on the bigger side then go one size higher. The problem I incurred was on the length of both skirt and top. they are both very short and difficult for my ten year old to rock this outfit without exposing too much. I had to get tights for her but she is still disappointed with the top that keeps going up. one has to constantly pull it down. Too much for anyone. It is versatile enough to wear casually or formally. My daughter is a petite/slim/leggy avg. size 10-12 regular. We ordered a size 10. The top is indeed a crop top but rests low enough that middrift is only exposed if she is raising her arms or exaggerating her upper body posture and the skirt length is long enough that she can optionally wear it higher on her waist to hide the crop top. The material of the skirt is wonderful! Incredibly soft/smooth sateen like cotton with just the right amount of stretchy. Despite the fabric being very lightweight and breathable it adequately blocks light and conceals undergarments.
