It in fact turns out to be a better fit for me than expected. This purchase was part of a greater plan for a complete system you see. I have been counting on my cell phone alarm to wake me up in the morning and have almost put the damn thing through a wall numerous times. How dare some silly robot command me from my sleep and offer me nothing for my troubles?Needless to say mornings are not a lot of fun for me and I have been allowing myself to get going later and later these days. So, in an effort to stop the current system of waking up 16 times before finally giving in to what little reason I can muster to actually get out of bed I decided to make a critical change. This is where this coffee maker comes in. I live in a basement and I am fine with this. The sun can kiss my a&& until I am ready for it anyway, but the need for caffeine can not be underestimated. Upstairs people make coffee I can't differentiate from water and it's an awfully long way to walk. This coffee maker is literally bedside now, hardly an arms full bend away. And it is proving to be a perfect tool for this application. Similar models have a giant "tank" on top you just dump a bag of beans into until you feel like you have enough. This is problematic for me because I like to change my coffees on a regular basis. This maker has a nice grinder housing that you measure your dosage into and it's clean with a quick rinse and ready for something new. Another bonus here is the grind basket, this is similar to the other models I will continue to complain about except it is very simple. Other models have some components to the grind basket that need to be turned into the right position to operate and are generally harder to clean. This is a single non mechanical piece of easily removed and rinsed plastic. Another win.Other than that everything else seems about comparable to other makers of this nature, and I would estimate a bit cheaper at that.Now this part may not matter to other purchasers but it is important to me. Seeing as how I live in the basement and I have a tendency to want to throw my phone when the alarm goes off I have discovered other benefits to having this machine so close to my bed. It's loud when it grinds, and it has the program feature that lets you set a time to begin brewing. Welcome my new alarm clock. It smells better when it starts to go off, and even better I am rewarded for waking up when I get to drink enough coffee to have a mild heart attack before standing up. This is quite outstanding. It comes with a little metal reusable basket as well and the grinds can go in the toilet and will help keep the bathroom smelling fresh.Other notes (for those wise enough to skip the above rantings):Comes with a charcoal filter. Nice but I will likely be using bottled water given the placement of my unit.Simple to use and clean. The cleaning part is a big deal to me.Replaces other appliances like alarm clocks and bathroom fresheners. The old model lasted 6 years, and I was pretty happy with it. However, I did have a few problems with the latches on the old model. On this new model, all of those problems seem to have been addressed.Like the latch on the door to the filter wasn't very strong. So, after it was about a year old, in the middle of brewing, occasionally the door would pop open and take the filter with it. Then the hot water would just spill out everywhere. I solved this problem by taking the spring out of the door. (The filter door doesn't really need to spring open anyway, you can just pull it open.) However, on the new model, this latch seems to be a better design. It seems like you have to push the button in farther before the door will spring open. So even if it gets a little dirty, or a little worn, I don't think it will pop open randomly. So, I don't think I'll be having the same problem.Towards the end of its life, I had the same sort of problem with the latch on the top. Every time the grinder started, the beans would fly up into the top of the bean cup, and push it open. The coffee maker has a sensor that turns off the grinder when the top is open, so thankfully there wasn't a huge mess to clean up. But, I couldn't get it to make coffee unless I was holding the top down with my hand, or weighing it down with something heavy. Now, again, this was in the last six months of the old coffee maker's life. So, I'm not super mad about it; that's just what ultimately led to me deciding to replace it. But on the new coffee maker, I can see the button and the latch clearly, and they are obviously bigger and sturdier. So, again, I don't expect to have the same problem.Other than that, it looks good. It makes coffe just the way I like. And it's really nice to have coffee freshly ground, and brewed, and waiting for you when you wake up in the morning. It's easy to program. The programming is pretty intuitive except for one thing, and that one thing IS covered in the instructions: in order to set the timer for how long you want it to stay on and keep the coffee warm (1, 2, 3, or 4 hours) you have to hold down the "on" button until the display starts blinking; the default is 2 hours. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars coffee, nectar of the gods *by G***. on Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2011* This is an easy coffee maker to use. Do you like that fresh ground, fresh brewed tasting coffee? Then this is the product for you! Comes with a coffee scoop/small brush & permanent gold-tone filter. My wife sets this up the night before with pre-ground coffee & I use it during the afternoon with coffee beans. This also has a feature of doing 1-4 cups - from what I understand, it runs the water through the heater a couple of times to insure that the brewing temp is right. So whether you brew 4 cups or 12 cups, it will be brewed at the proper temp.The grinder does make some noise [it is a grinder, it has to make noise], but it isn't an unreasonable amount of noise. I actually think it is quieter than the noise a traditional electric coffee grinder makes. The ground coffee lands evenly in the filter & the water is evenly piped into the filter area. My only issues are that you have a little bit more to clean up than one of the el-cheapo coffee makers -- but if you really care about the quality of your coffee, than it is worth it. The grinder is removable for cleaning, as well as the basket & perma-filter.
