Not so you can enable us and feel sorry for us, but so you can be even better equipped to deal with the situations and things brought by the addict, I do think it could be helpful in that way. We aren’t terrible awful human beings ... but we are sick, very sick. Also, if you’re the loved one of an addict & lost at what to do - please make an open AA/NA meeting or Al-anon, this is extremely important. If you are lost at what to do or need peace in your life - as you deserve- make those meetings. So ... I haven’t finished this book yet but , I love it. I am in recovery myself and one thing I will say, if you are an addict , and depending where you are in your recovery or on your journey, some of the detailed parts when she shoots up , I could see how that could possibly be a trigger for some. I mean, I have some time in the program now & sober and I am so far away from that lifestyle & then using at this point but still, just the details parts of getting a drug ready and the moment it’s in your body, those parts can make your skin a little itchy. But it didn’t make me want to go out and use and following the description of those few moments in the book you’re reminded of the aftermath, the awfulness and destruction. But, I think it’s important to at least mention here because addiction IS cunning, baffling, and powerful. So anyways! I really love this book. It is written really well. Throughout it though I kind of wonder how in the hell she remembered some of or most of these conversations and interactions and situations.... My mind couldn’t remember or grasp much for quite some time after putting the surf & drink down so how she was able to put this book together all she went through in such detail , I mean I don’t think she is lying lol, I just don’t know how! I am probably half way or more through the book. It is an easy read and people who read and make time for it could finish it in a couple days. She is an incredible woman. And this book shows another story to give hope. Those rock bottom moments where we want to die, how we never think we could have a life out of that rock bottom and this is it for us ..... well, it is not. There is ALWAYS more. No matter what your rock bottom was or is, there is another life. NONE of us are hopeless or useless here. I was once the hopeless one. I knew it & everyone else knew it, too. I was talked about, shamed, & looked down upon... & a friend “randomly” dragged me into a meeting one day, he said just come w/me n check it out. I was wasted high & drunk, but I went every single day & 2yrs in I started to clean up -& the friend who took me is no longer around. Meeting makers make it. It might take awhile but as I was told, don’t leave before the miracle happens. I was drinking doing pills & all drugs & shooting up before & after meetings, all day every day, there were a few ppl that rolled their eyes at me & “KNEW” I wouldn’t be there long but, 98% of them didn’t care that I was a sloppy mess, I was there for a reason & bc clearly I needed the help & I had no clue how to NOT use, that was literally all I knew.... & ALL of those ppl are my family today. 8 years ago I walked into my 1st meeting. My life is completely different today. If you’re struggling w/addiction, start getting to meetings. If you’re the loved one, find open meetings or al-anon/na-anon.
