In the case of a bathroom, a coating would likely be optimal. **Q: Can this be used outside of a bird cage, or will the bars heat up?** A: You'd want to keep it a foot or two away from the cage, so that it won't burn the birds. It will heat up the bars some, but if you experiment with it and watch it closely, you can figure out how far/close to put it to the cage so your birds are warm but not getting burnt from the bars. It's a good, warm heat lamp for sure. **Q: Can this be used for NEAR infrared lamp saunas?** A: I built a near infrared sauna with these bulbs to replace the far IR sauna I had before (I guess these bulbs have both as described in the other comments, but this was what my health practitioner advised, that these red heat lamp bulbs are "the" bulb for near IR). amazon also sells dr larry wilson's book on how to build your own sauna.... it doesn't have to be fancy, I know a woman with limited space who managed to attach these bulbs with sockets from Lowe's to an adjustable mic stand that she carries into her small shower stall so she can detox sauna that way.
