I am keeping this new one in the original packaging with some tape and in another dedicated drawer between uses.It works well. You can follow the red tip as it goes up to the temperature while the bottom of the thermometer points to different meats and poultry, so it lines up correctly for each type of meat and suggested temperatures. I use this in addition to my oven's meat probe that connects to the oven and monitors temperature, and this thermometer is very accurate. I like to move it around in different spots if roasting a large bird/turkey to make sure all is cooked.This is not a dinky little thermometer. It is a larger one, and it is the best one I have owned.2016 Update. Just used it for my Thanksgiving turkey. It still works. I handwash it.
