## Description

New York Times Bestseller! Discover this award-winning masterpiece before the release of George Takei's deeply personal follow-up, It Rhymes With Takei (June 2025).
A stunning graphic memoir recounting actor/author/activist George Takei's childhood imprisoned within American concentration camps during World War II. Experience the forces that shaped an American icon -- and America itself -- in this gripping tale of courage, country, loyalty, and love.
George Takei has captured hearts and minds worldwide with his captivating stage presence and outspoken commitment to equal rights. But long before he braved new frontiers in Star Trek
, he woke up as a four-year-old boy to find his own birth country at war with his father's -- and their entire family forced from their home into an uncertain future.
In 1942, at the order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, every person of Japanese descent on the west coast was rounded up and shipped to one of ten "relocation centers," hundreds or thousands of miles from home, where they would be held for years under armed guard.
They Called Us Enemy is Takei's firsthand account of those years behind barbed wire, the joys and terrors of growing up under legalized racism, his mother's hard choices, his father's faith in democracy, and the way those experiences planted the seeds for his astonishing future.
What does it mean to be American? Who gets to decide? When the world is against you, what can one person do? To answer these questions, George Takei joins co-writers Justin Eisinger & Steven Scott and artist Harmony Becker for the journey of a lifetime.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Must Read

challenging, emotional, informative, inspiring, reflectivemedium-pacedThis was such an informative but sad read. I was not fully aware of the camps and treatment Japanese Americans were subjected to during World War II.George Takei was a very young boy when his family was forced to move out of their home. He takes us on a journey in this memoir of that time. His young mind at first saw it as a vacation, but then quickly learned that was not the case. His parents did what they could to shield him and make the circumstances as normal as possible in this new, unknown time. He was able to give the story depth through POVs from his dad, his mom, and even his own. George has not allowed the way he and his family were treated by the US to cloud his life. He has shown in his acting and charitable ventures that we can all be better.Although this happened over 80 years ago, reading this and reflecting on how America is today. It feels like history is repeating itself with all the racism that still exists.I recommend that this graphic novel be read by all.Reasons I enjoyed this book:Inspirational, Page-turner, Realistic, Tear-jerker, Tragic

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A great lesson

This was so touching even in the most simplistic form. It's direct, which is great for making an easily digestible comic for those who don't normally read comics. The pain of what Japanese interned people faced is in plain view with a first hand account from George Takei. The story illustrates the need to study history and stick together so that we don't repeat history. Unfortunately we are seeing history repeat and perhaps it never stopped if you consider the prison industrial complex. My hope is that people read this and see how propaganda bred discontent among the American people and they grow better at changing that.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A well written survivors tale with a happy ending.

I am a huge Star Trek fan. This book about George Takei’s childhood is both moving and heartbreaking. His family went through so much simply because of the way they looked. This was a disgraceful chapter in American history, told by someone who lived through it. Happily he went on to have a bright and positive future as an extremely talented actor. But this is a part of our nation’s past that should not be forgotten.
