    I really liked the artwork

This is my first time reading this comic. I really liked the artwork, rough and edgy. I liked the story even better. Horrors of war are not sugar-coated, and it is tough finding humor in civil war.

Two French cartoonists' take on our civil war

*by E***N on Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2009*

This is the translation of a French-language comic about two soldiers in the Civil War Union cavalry, Sgt. Cornelius Chesterfield and his reluctant-soldier sidekick, Cpl. Blutch. These comics run to many volumes in the original, but this is only the second translation into English of one of them.On the whole, I liked it a lot---I'd have given it five full stars, but for one particularly egregrious error, unusual in this generally well-researched series. Barbed wire was invented several decades after the US Civil War, and here, it's used to fence in prisoners of war. Robertsonville was ostensibly based on the real Andersonville, but is much less horrific than Andersonville---the emphasis here is on comedy, and there was nothing at all funny about Andersonville.

Got a set of 3 of these for a C’mas present for my 14 year old son who is an avid reader but also likes comics. Had not really heard of these but the American civil war them is handy for the American History part of th3 GCSE course he is studying. The story them makes a nice change from the supernatural themed comics that seem to be in fashion; he likes the Archie comics and formerly the Aestrix and TinTin themed ones.
