I used this product about a year ago without the detergent and I haven't had any issues with the images fading. **Q: Can you use xray film?** A: Yes you can, but it will give you dark bones and light negative space. So consider an Xray is a positive and not a negative **Q: Will the image still last without using the SolarFast detergent wash after the dye?** A: Probably not. Exposing it to the sun without the wash will continue to expose the image, and all parts that have unexposed dye will become dark, unless you leave dye off of some parts. This would be hard for photo exposure, but may be possible with tie-dye. Not sure if the dye itself comes out with regular clothing detergent prior to "fixing" it with the solarfast detergent.
