I had a long, informative conversation with my vet about cat bathroom habits gone horribly wrong & learned that there are multiple factors at work in what makes an animal use a spot. XO has NO deterrent to prevent using the spot again. (A deterrent in the garden, for example, is red pepper flakes which cause the animal to avoid the area.) My experience is that XO takes away the "marking" scent that made the spot attractive to the animal. But the spot might be attractive for other reasons (how it feels, location & other factors.) XO can't solve that. I tried a product sold by my local pet supply store. It did not work as well as XO. I continue to buy XO. My cat who liked to use my best rug as a bathroom passed away from old age. I continue to buy XO to use around the house. I have a youngster who is sometimes visited by the barf fairy during the night & his aim misses the toilet bowl -- XO works wonders in ridding smells. It does not merely mask them as some product do. Hope this helps. **Q: I have seen suggestions all over the board for amount to use in my carpet cleaner. Does the manufacturer suggest how many ounces per gallon of water?** A: Yes the recommendation is 1 gallon water to 1 oz X-O for carpet extraction equipment **Q: We need a caregiver for my mom but the lady said she couldn't stand the smell of cigarettes. Will this product eliminate odor right away ?** A: We don't smoke so I'm not sure. It does well on other odors. **Q: Will it kill germs associated with rat urine and dropings?** A: I don't know. I would not expect it to be a very effective germicide. It does take care of odors very well. I use it in a 1:3 solution for general cleaning of cat litter pans and full strength for spot cleaning for odor. I would call the company for the question re:germicide. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ X-0 IS INCREDIBLE!! *by C***1 on April 14, 2014* We have 4 cats and recently have had a major problem with the 2 of the cats urinating on the carpet. Plus, 2 started spraying the wall in 2 selected locations. I have cleaned with chemicals, used steam, used special shampoo which said it would get out cat urine smell, and at least 8 other products prior to my looking to buy a flame thrower. None of the stuff I purchased worked. Then I found this product by accident, read the reviews and said "Its too expensive and won't work". Other half said buy it and at least try. I did. Received this plus we purchased a smaller bottle of concentrate. I read instructions and decided to use a 32 oz hand sprayer with a mix of 10 oz concentrate and the rest water. Then I attacked. To say I was stunned by the results is an understatement. In one area of the carpet I have steam cleaned 5 times in two days. A discernible odor was still there. I sprayed this area (about ten good STREAMS to soak carpet.) I could smell the slight scent of the neutralizer. It is somewhat industrial but not unpleasant, and it is a very light fragrance. I attacked 7 other areas (3 known and 4 suspected). When finished I still had about 1/3 of the spray mixture left. Other half then came home and immediately said, "What smells so nice". This means that odors were eliminated within 10 minutes of my beginning to spray. Usually we could smell an acrid odor......Now....nothing. I told her what I did and we decided to wait 24 hours to see if odors came back. There was no odor after 24 hours, and no residual order after 7 days. Also noted, cats stayed away from areas sprayed. I have redone carpets and then sprayed (misted) total carpet area. Cats have not sprayed or urinated anywhere. Does X-O work? It is the ONLY item I have found that does. As for price, X-0 is worth much much more than what I paid. Recommend the 10oz concentrate to 20 oz water mix in a spray bottle. Also, we vacuumed the carpet very well, then steam cleaned. Once carpet was dry (took about 8 hours), we used the X-O. (Note: I have used 4 different and expensive rug steam shampoos . After carpet was dry, odor was still there, but cleaner than before.) THEN we used the X-O This worked very well for us. Will I buy again? ABSOLUTELY! Vendor shipped both bottles very well packed. Will use this vendor again. I've found that it works well to clean up both stinky messes (we have 19 indoor cats - so we have a fair number of stinky messes) and for just general cleaning around the house. It's my primary cleaner. We use it as a hard surface spray on all of our plastic, painted, and even some of the wood surfaces in our home. I also use it in the carpet cleaning machine and it works well there - both on carpets and as an upholstery cleaner for the house and car. For me, it's major selling points are that it works in a variety of uses...in a spray on...wipe off fashion, unlike some of the enzymatic solutions which require leaving the product on and keeping it wet for a period of time. I also like that it is safe for use around the pets.I've tried a lot of products to deal with odors associated with territorial marking that a couple of our cats do when they are stressed by changes in the household - company - the holidays - furniture being moved - etc. This is, for me, the best match for cost and effectiveness. Not only that, it's easy to use. I keep several spray bottles of solution mixed up and use it whenever I clean...whether anyone has been naughty or not. It's a great multi-surface cleaner.
