Surprise, a British frigate, is under the command of Captain Jack Aubrey. Aubrey and the Surprise's current orders are to track and capture or destroy a French privateer named Acheron. It was a no-brainer getting this on bluray. The movie is atleast 10 years old and it looks wonderful on bluray. On the review of the bluray.The video quality is great with vivid details and deep blacks. Don't expect HD quality clarity like you might see in a Pixar movie. This is pure conversion of film to 1080p and its great. You might notice graininess but that's how to film was shot. I haven't compared with the DVD version but I can bet that its miles above the DVD quality. The audio quality is great as well with noisy ship battles and stillness during the lull moments.In terms of special features, it only include the trailer and some deleted scenes. This is definitely a downer but blame the Studio for that, not Excel. I have the DVD version as well, which has alot more special features. So, no worries for me.Overall, I love this movie and if you do too, its a keeper on bluray. Were the British are fighting with french. This movie focuses on the Naval warfare of those times and potrays it Realistically. It is a Cat and mouse game in the Vast ocean between the two vessels.In this move the French ship is shown to be stronger and Faster compared to the English one. Russell Crowe plays a very determined and Relaxed English Captain of his ship.He is also very Understanding to his crew and especially his friend/Doctor Maturin. capt jack aubrey(russell crowe) would always have an emotional attachment to the Doctor. The doctor is also interested in Botanical and animal life in the land.He tries to study them and workings of nature.He is well educated in various matter as well. There is an amazing Naval war sequence in beginning of the movie with Great Visual and even better sound effects.you can feel the Cannon blast and in the tension as if you were there.The Ships deck are shown realistically like different sections and quarters belonging to workers,soldier and Commander class. Some young stars are shown in the movie were they are also given training for being a commander and captain.There is sometimes a father figure feeling to Crowe's character.He has to sometimes make hard decisions for welfare of his men and ship.There are some relaxing moments as well as it shows the island life of amazonians who trade various things with the ships crew then there is Doctors interest in insect and animal life in the islands of south america... This movie also shows the traumatic effects of war and depression on the young sailors and captain. sometimes there is also conflict with the worker class and young captains.Old surgical procedures for healing injury are also shown in this movie.the Entire ship is basically a mini england..Even the chefs life in the ship is shown making French toast!Cinematrography- I say again I would not have watched this movie for its Amazing Cinematrography and visually stunning islands and panoramic sea views.The Movie makes you feel your there the camera work is very gentle and subtle.The war sequences are tense and brutal yet artistic.. I remember as a child I would see clasic movies with similar naval battles but Master and commander does it better.Not many movies show about Naval warfare of this times (except for Pirates of the carribean)..Imagine the hardships of Operating a ship at that time only with wind power and no radar guided missiles?.. The island seens are als overy captivating capturing island animal life in there solitude.This movie has won Oscar for Cinematrography and best sound editing.If you like good looking movies you should definately pick this up in BD disc...not dvd.! This film was shot in 35mm film that means its not Digital cameras like most directors do it to save money...but FILM is the reason its more visually stunning and better!Music-Some very good western Classical music scores....In the movie it is shown that the captain and his doctor usually play music with the chello and violin...Its a nice relaxing music. complimenting the sea..There is one Downside to this purchase there is no "behind the scenes" for this movie on the bluray which is very annoying.Its important to have extra features on the bluray..SInce thats what BDs are about..otherwise I am Happy with the purchase and Discount offered.
