The work great for making shelves or end tables. I built an end table for my office out of the pipe. I have ordered black pipe before and what I really like about this product is the threaded section is shorter and so it makes for a more uniform length when you add on the elbows and T connectors, etc. It also means that less of the thread is showing after you complete the project. Given the product is for shelving and furniture (at least what I ordered) it is lighter (still very strong and sturdy....it is not cheap) and easier to work with. One big benefit is it is PRE PAINTED black. If you like that color you don't have to do any painting. other black pipe needs to be cleaned off, lightly sanded and spray painted which adds A LOT of time. For this project, the black color was perfect and no additional painting was necessary.
