I immediately rinsed off the tiny Styrofoam flakes that were inside and out but easy to remove, and filled them up. I was pretty excited that the water doesn't just run right out when you flip them over. When you insert them into the soil a few bits of dirt rose into the bird but they seem to be functioning well. After a day, they'd released some water so I guess it's working. Pretty large plants so I wonder if I'll need more birds per plant later. The birds are a little more detailed than I expected. Tiny little eyes and beaks included. Have already refilled them. Maybe I should have actually watered the plant first. Review: Cutest ones around! - These are the cutest ones I've found! I added all 3 to pots yesterday. 2 held their water, 1 emptied within 10 minutes. I retried a couple of times and decided 2 of 3 working was good, they still look nice. I tried again the next day after realizing the pot was dry. I watered it and then added the bird full of water; it has had water in it all day now. One of the others is now dry, the plant may have needed it.
