The porous nature of wood along with the thick and textured nature of this paint would create a very good mechanical bond when applied. Obviously some woods are more porous than others, so it may adhere to a soft wood like pine much better than a very dense wood like teak. Porosity aside, if you sand the wood very well with coarse sandpaper like 80 grit, you would still achieve an excellent bond. I would not use any sort of primer on the wood prior to application, however, don’t be surprised if the wood soaks up some the initial first coat.
