This happened as a result of pulling the remote in and out of my pocket over time. The rubber replacement is quite nice durable, but the feel is not as nice as leather. My "best of both worlds solution" was to install the rubber cover on my remote, and cut out the worn and damaged parts of the leather cover, and then install the leather cover back over the rubber cover. End result, double remote protection, and the feel of leather rather than the feel of rubber.
