The straw is for water spray only so it does not need to be washed. If your filling the bottle with other drinks, remove the straw to keep it clean. As for cold enough, I fill mine with ice and then add water. It stays cool most of the day.. Wanna keep it cold all day I put a wine ice sleeve on it and carry it all in a thermos case carrier bag.
