Review: Perfect for whole house protection--10 year update added - 10 YEAR UPDATE: So I've had this thing in place now for a few months shy of 10 years. It has saved my butt on multiple occasions, nothing major but assorted dripping valves and the like. All I've had to do with it is change the batteries every few years, and I also wired the alarm contacts into my home alarm system. That's it. It still looks and works the same as it did the day I bought it. I'm going to buy another as a backup, although the way things are going I may never need it. ------ A few weeks ago, my neighbor was essentially flooded out of his house by a balky washing machine left unattended. I have watched contractors come and go, ripping up flooring, moving in fans and dehumidifiers, and totally disrupting these peoples' lives, and these events were a stark reminder to me of how a relatively minor issue can quickly escalate into a major catastrophe. Three weeks, and they are still unable to return home. So with this fresh in my mind I began searching for something...anything...that might offer at least some assurance that this wouldn't happen to me. That's when I ran across the Floodstop system. I know that this particular valve and controller were designed for water heater protection only, but like many people (look on YouTube) I elected to install it right at my water main. Luckily I had already installed a GE whole house carbon filter a couple years ago, and that was plumbed in using flexible water heater supply lines. That made adding this a relatively easy task. I screwed in a 3/4" compression adapter into the inlet side of the valve, connected that to my inlet piping, and screwed the existing flex line feeding the filter to the male outlet of the valve. I placed the controller on the garage wall nearby, but then I was left with running sensor wires to 9 different locations, with only an attic crawlspace to work in. I had a large spool of 22 gauge, 4 conductor telephone station wire, and that worked out well. I did drops from the attic and down the inside of the walls, poking through near the baseboard at 3 sinks, 2 toilets, my dishwasher, clothes washer, fridge icemaker, and water heater. The attic ends of these wires were all soldered together in parallel at a convenient location with one final wire running into the garage and down to the controller. As for the actual sensors, I utilized the one supplied with the system at the water heater, but elected to make my own for the other 8 drops. I have a pretty strong electrical and electronics background, so was able to make these sensors, based on the original, from 8, 2" x 4" pieces of 'perf board' and 16, 3 1/2 foot long lengths of 22 gauge, uninsulated tinned copper wire. Once I soldered the sensors to the various drops, I carefully tested each one several times, and observed the electric valve close consistently and the controller go into alarm during each test. Needless to say, this was a fairly substantial project--much more so than just protecting the water heater. Still, it was in my mind well worth the planning and effort. After having the system in place for a week or so, I feel that the overall quality of the valve, and some fairly advanced features offered by this controller, (monthly self test of the valve with no action needed on my part, full battery backup, etc) were well worth the investment in money and time. Obviously nothing in life is a sure thing, but at least the Floodstop system will I believe shift the odds in my favor when it comes to avoiding the kinds of headaches experienced by my neighbors and others I know, and at a cost that's 1/8th of my insurance deductible.....
Review: Tests out ok. Hope to never need it! - Works fine when tested both by wetting the paper and touching the conductors on the sensor. Installing extra sensor for washing machine, snd added one for condensation overflow from A/C. Shutting off the water doesn't help, but it will give an alert. (It has only happened once in 15 years. I don't like the serial connection so will test with 2 sensors in parallel. "Manifold" is overpriced.

Works as advertised. Replaced an older rusted valve, with this one. Recommend this so water does not continually flow in case the water heater leaks. The sensor quickly senses water in the drain pan and shuts off the water supply to the water heater. It installs in less than 15 minutes.
