My 100-year-old father had broken his neck and needs to be helped around, and this has been so useful. It moves easily, even on our carpet (which is older and flatter). He is over six feet, so he does need to be sure to fit his knees into the pads and then sit, or he risks sitting too high on the seat. We had used a more expensive one at the rehab facility and had hoped to find one locally to purchase, but without luck. We took a chance on this one, and it has been well worth the money. We also have a wheel chair and a walker, so with these three, it has simplified getting him around. Review: Having a degenerative neurological condition, the challenge are many fold. The lift must be staggered a bit to one side to allow its wheels to fit with one lift wheel inside the wheelchair outrigger and the other outside the wheelchair outrigger. This makes for a difficult process for patients to lift themselves out of their wheelchair and hold a standing position until the lift seats are set. My sister can make the maneuver, but it is not easy. No problem with her commode, hospital bed or furniture chairs. **Q: We also have a very short patient and are interested in more information on modifying it for a proper fit.** A: The Lumex 1600 can be dangerous for short patients if used only with the seat pads, since they do not have locks. Short people who can not sit on top of the pads are liable to fall out backwards when the seat pads bounce up when going over bumps or thresholds. **Q: What are the dimensions of base?** A: The base is not square. The front width is 26" the back width is 17". The length from front to back is 30". Another measurement you might need is height of the small back wheels to slide under a recliner or bed, 5" clearance is needed. Hope that answers your questions. **Q: do the front bars expand out to reach around chairs? I tried one at a med store, but it was twice as expensive.** A: No but the lower bars go under a chair. it is working great for my Daughter. She is able to stand up with it. I just had a stroke which was a surprise to me. I thought it was an attack. I Spent nearly 40 days in 2 hospitals and then a rehab clinic. Everyone was determined to get me walking and strengthen the muscles in my legs and arms. For two and a half years I used to crawl on the floor in order to take a shower get from room to room and would need my husband and son to help boost me up to get me into an office chair with wheels so I could move on the kitchen floor. I needed help when I came home just to get up the stairs and we thought I would need a stair lift. I had used a surfboard or wooden board to transfer from a wheelchair to the bed or the commode but I would need something else because I was not comfortable using the surfboard and gait belt. My husband tried to get a Sara-Stedy Because that would make it easier for me to do the transfers. He checked everywhere, but our only option was to spend between three and 4 thousand dollars to get a new one. This was not an option for us because of the cost factor. My husband searched everywhere and finally located this. It even works on our carpeting and it is just like the Sara-Stedy they had at The rehabilitation clinic. It is great! We keep it in the living room and it makes transferring from the wheelchair to the commode easy as pie. I am able to help myself get up by hanging on to the bar with just a little boost from my husband or son. The paddles make it easy to rest and the knee pads keep my knees from giving out. I also am Rolled down the hall and put on my bed. I find this so much easier than struggling with the surfboard.
