I see a bit of overscan artifacts at bottom few lines of video, but that could easily be my 30yo deck (but gives the captured video that old-timey look LOL) or stuff they used to add to analog video years ago that should have been captured because it was there. The captured video display is much better than I expected. (I'm actually very surprised the mechanics still work on my old VCR; guess that's a +1 for old Mitsubishi VCRs. Note I first inserted an old pre-recorded tape I was willing to sacrifice in case the mechanism ate it.) The only minus for the converter is that the audio plugs don't directly attach to the VCR (but it seems all converters have female plugs); but finding RCA patch cords (M-M) lying around was easy. So while the S-Video plugs right in, the audio plugs don't; make sure you have patch cords available.Update: After looking at some other direct VHS to USB converters, many reviews mentioned sound issues. In transferring a tape with 35mins of content, the sounds at the end still seemed synced. (Now if I could just go back in time and ask the next-door neighbor to not mower his lawn right then...). I tried both the 720p and 1080p switch positions and I find the 1080p has a few more artifacts from S-Video (and no, I wasn't expecting HD video, just wanted to make sure I was sampling the analog signal at a high enough rate (see Nyquist-Shannon)) than the 720p position so I'll convert all my tapes at 720p. And it seems that export from QuickTime at 480p was good enough because of the S-VHS source material and half the file size. Maybe I'll spend the 25bucks and try using an outside service and compare quality? ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good value *by D*** on August 12, 2025* Good value and works as expected ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works up to 1080p. It takes HDMI as an input with up to 1080p video and outputs composite 480i video and stereo analog audio.This product did allow me to continue to use a rather old LCD TV that I used in a kitchen that only had analog inputs. I verified that it operates with both an older Amazon FireTV stick, and an HD Apple TV (4th gen). The device does not claim 4K support, and that was not tested. This TV is near a family room where a DirecTV receiver fed both HDMI to the family room TV and composite to the kitchen. I am going to migrate away from that receiver, and was looking for a solution to keep using the old TV. This older TV is also a 4:3 aspect ratio (as was typical) and not 16:9 of newer TVs.The video quality is acceptable, but not great. On a dark screen digital noise noticeable. The video levels look off, resulting in a rather dark picture. The same TV as noted above is connected to a composite source from a DirecTV receiver on another composite input. Comparing the same content from the two sources shows the composite output from the DirecTV receiver looks much better, and more correct. It is still useable, but not great. It is good enough to watch while eating at the kitchen table, so serves the purpose. This isn’t our primary display.Also referenced above is the aspect ratio. This device does not make any attempt to change the aspect ratio. Some devices will allow for zoom, shrink with top and bottom bars, or some non-linear scaling. This device simply fills the entire screen with the 16:9 content. This results in the display being “squeezed” with a 16:9 image squeezed into a 4:3 display. In our case we have been living with the same from the DirecTV source for years as we have the normal 16:9 mode selected for the primary display. Again, this isn’t our primary display.An interesting feature is that when there is no input signal, such as when the Apple TV is in sleep, this device outputs a color bar pattern and text that there is no signal.As has become quite common with devices, yet none the less annoying is that it does not come with a power supply. It comes with a short cable from the connector on the device to a USB A connector. You need to supply a USB charger/power supply or other USB 5V source. The Amazon page for a the device shows to use a 5V 1A charger. I used a charger rated at 750 mA with no problem. I know this is a low-cost device, I still find it annoying that it doesn’t come with a power supply required to make it functional. I have so many of these types of devices now that I’ve basically run out of the 5V chargers I’ve had around.The device does come with short output cables for composite video and audio. These may be sufficient for your application if you put the device right by the TV. These are short, roughly about 6 inches. In my case I needed a longer cable and had to use double-female RCA couplers to connect the cable. Jacks on the device would have been more convenient for my application.The device works, and mostly does what it claims to do. The video quality isn’t great, but is acceptable.
