They really, really suck. All they do is smudge. This is very disappointing because the pencils are great. **Q: are the leads refillable?** A: Yes! Just gently remove the eraser and put refil lead in the chamber. Hold the eraser end of the pen and gently replace the eraser! **Q: Are these good to use for 3 graders to use for school?** A: My then-3rd grader used these successfully last year. He's hard on his pencils! I bought a special (good!) sharpener but would still rather use these, plus they're great to carry in a purse/tote since the lead retracts.
