The autorun.ini files are missing, so drivers do not install automatically. There are numerous folders with setup.exe files, however these generate error messages. Fortunately, the driver package can be downloaded and installed from StarTech’s website.Video capture software installation, limitations, and bugs:The software is “Movavi”. It has an unbelievably long 42-digit registration code which needs to be typed in, followed by emailing Movavi and then entering a long code which they send back. The software can only save recordings in .avi format. There are no settings for video quality, bit-rate, etc. Recorded files can not be played in Windows Media Player, and VLC player starts up with an “AVI file index broken or missing” error message, but then plays the file.Recording quality of Movavi software:Video from analog tapes needs a digital timebase corrector (TBC) in the tape player, in order to avoid minor jagged edges in the image. Only high-end VCRs have digital TBC circuits, which often have to be enabled in the VCR’s menus.Even with digital TBC, video motion is recorded with very noticeable “interlace artifact”, since Movavi records it in non-interlaced format, thus losing the original interlace timing information. This artifact shows up as thin horizontal stripes in moving parts of the image, and completely ruins the movie watching experience (see attached image).Solutions:You could buy the older SVID2USB2 instead. It uses GrabBee software to record in many formats, and does not have the “interlace artifact” problem. It also does not have any of the ridiculous Movavi registration process to go through. The drivers and software on the CD work perfectly fine, at least in Windows Vista, 7, and 10. The problem is that SVID2USB2 has been discontinued, and is now being sold at outrageous prices, even by StarTech itself.
