For me, it makes a perfect EDC item because of the combination of a quality, well-locking blade and a useful flashlight. The other features work well, but aren't items I need to depend on in an every day situation, so constant camping or other emergency situations might reveal weaknesses that I haven't come across. Additionally, the company sells replacement flashlight units with things other than fire starters at the other end--this makes that portion of the unit replaceable and some people find one of the other inserts serves their needs better. I will go into some detail on the different features and my experiences with them:Overall Construction: Has proven durable despite drops, with minimal scuffing on the tool body itself. I keep it in my front jeans / khakis pocket with the clip hanging it on my pocket. As another reviewer notes, using the clip in this manner does make the knife ride a little high--you have about an inch of the tool visible. This has not been a problem for me--it makes the flashlight head accessible so I can actually turn it on while still clipped (though it won't turn on accidentally). You can also grip the hole in the blade before you start to pull it out; this allows me to start to open the blade while pulling it out in one fluid motion. Because so much of the tool is visible, however, with the clip, it does limit my desire to clip it to my front pocket when wearing, say, a suit.Blade: I have been pleased with the quality of the blade's steel. It came sharp and held a working edge for a fairly long time. It has been relatively easy to re-sharpen the non-serrated portion of the blade, though because it is 50/50 serrated, it does take a bit of care to not disturb the serrated portion when sharpening. I use/abuse the blade of this knife daily to open boxes, plastic packaging, cut thread, cut plastic "wire" used to secure many retail tags, remove splinters, cut drinking straws (they are always too tall for kids' cups in restaurants), cut food in a pinch, harvest flowers and herbs from the garden, remove bark from and sharpen sticks for roasting on the campfire, slicing fruit on the go, and a host of other everyday uses. With all that, I have had to grind a new edge on the blade when knicks and notches inevitably appear, and it has resharpened well, even with that. Even having been used to pry from time to time, the blade does not have any noticeable play when locked. The hole in the blade works well for my fingers to open and close one-handed, though my fingers are probably a bit more slender than most. It did take some practice, especially since the blade does not have any spring-action or assist when opening or closing. I find I don't mind this, particularly since it gives me more control when closing one-handed; I have yet to chop my finger off. Finally, the serrated edge of the knife works like a champ--not much to say about serrated knives; they are good for brute force cutting (I frequently cut rope to secure items in my truck) and can take over some jobs when the non-serrated edge needs sharpening and I haven't gotten around to it yet.Blade Lock: The blade lock itself has proven strong and secure in mine. Other reviewers seem to have had some issues with the lock, but I have not had any such issues. I find the lock secures the blade tightly, but that it can, with practice, be unlocked and closed with one hand.Flashlight: Again, maybe I just got lucky, but mine has been gold. Don't have problems turning it on or off. I don't have problems with it staying in the receptacle (if anything, it's almost *too* tight). I use the flashlight almost daily. It might not light your way home in the woods, but for keying into the house/car, finding the missing item under the car seat or couch, avoiding toys on the floor during middle of the night bathroom runs, shining light in a recessed screw hole, task lighting when working on small parts or electronics, etc. it is invaluable. My batteries lasted two years under short burst use like that; the batteries still were not dead then, but the light was starting to diminish too much to be useful. With new batteries, the light is surprisingly bright for such a compact flashlight. You can purchase AG3 or LR41 batteries for a couple bucks for a 10 pack here on Amazon. Also, you can spend 2x to 3x that amount and use SR41 batteries, which are the silver oxide version. The SR41's won't last quite as long, but they stay bright throughout a longer portion of their life. I believe you can also find a small, single battery that is the same size as the four LR41s stacked together, and use that one battery cell instead, but I don't know the specs on that.Magnesium Fire Starter: Read enough reviews on this knife and you will see a dichotomy between people who know that you must work off the protective coating first, and those who are frustrated by having to spend a couple minutes to get a fire going because they expect sparks on the first strike. Once the coating is removed, however, the fire steel does an admirable job. I use it frequently to practice (with my family) making fires for emergencies, etc. The striker notches on the back of the blade do require some force to get good sparks, due to the type of steel used in the blade. This is a catch-22. It does make it harder to get a good spark shower, but I use the blade more than the fire starter, personally, so I am ok with this trade-off. You can, indeed, easily start a fire with proper knowledge and practice; the fire starter here will generally not be your weak link in the process.Whistle: I find the whistle to be the least functional portion of this tool. I have only tried it out a handful of times, but I have found mine to not be loud enough for my tastes in a signal whistle, though loud enough to annoy a house full of people. I find my whistle lacks some clarity, though maybe that is being picky for an emergency whistle. I'm just not convinced mine was molded quite properly, or perhaps it is a design flaw. Seems like something of an afterthought, is all.All in all, this knife has paid itself back many times over, and current Amazon prices (as of May 2013) are cheaper than what I paid for mine. If the manufacturing process is still of the same quality as when I purchased mine, then I cannot recommend this knife highly enough. It has gotten me out of many jams and has made my life easier on many more occasions. As a retired Green Beret with over 25 years in Special Forces, I have gone through countless knives. The Tool Logic knives have always offered the best "bang for buck." This is more than just a knife, it is a multi-tasking survival tool. Most folks that dabble in survival will agree that the bare minimum you need to survive is a tool to cut (good knife) a means to make fire and way to collect water. This tool meets two of the needs and then some. I use my knife daily for simple tasks like opening boxes, cutting cord, etc. but more and more I use this knife's great little light. It is perfect for finding the key hole on a dark night, looking into dark nooks (like hooking up wires behind an entertainment system) and many more uses. Add to that that it has a very functional whistle for signaling and you have a great little tool for a low price.This knife only has two drawbacks: One; the pocket clip is now on the opposite in you have to remove it from your pocket and turn it around to open the blade. On the previous version,the SL1, you could open the blade easily with one hand while removing it strait from the pocket, this was a much better design. Second, the knife is heavier than the previous model. The heavier design makes it a bit stronger, but for light cutting jobs for which a knife this size is used for, the extra steel is just extra weight.I have purchased several of the old SL1 knives and several of these new SLP2 knives. I take new, very nice light and fire starter out of the new knife and put in the old SL1 and have the perfect system. Still, bang for the buck, this is a great knife. ### ⭐⭐⭐ 3.0 out of 5 stars Good idea but awkward grip and poor fit and finish. *by S***G on Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2010* The single sided primary grind (chisel grind) blade is sharp and easy to open and of convenient size, the light works well for such a small unit, and the fire starter throws an impressive shower of hot sparks with a tool steel striker I provided. There is quite a bit less spark using the striker part of the stainless blade, but enough to start a fire. This tool provides a good bit of functionality in this small package.The down side is the very poor fit and finish and a problematic liner lock, which must be checked to ensure it engages. Mine would not lock without encouragement until I filed away some rough edges. A simple fix, but that is was required indicates poor quality control. The light/firestarter is held in by an o-ring that tends to bind and roll when being re-inserted. Holding the knife feels awkward due to the hump for the light/firestarter holder, but that does not impair it's function.
