I can hear almost everything with them on, it's just slightly muffled; if someone is talking to me, I can hear and understand everything they say.With that said, they do help when the landscapers are working and when I have to go out into a noisy environment. I actually slept through an alarm with these on.Overall, these are great for babies, kids, and adults with hearing sensitivity.
