Which does not sound like much, but in my experience is a pretty good distance. You don't want to have to go thru too many layers to get to a piece. **Q: The cost is for a pair of racks? Twelve pegs and two verticals ?** A: Yes. I hung mine on the side of a shed under an awning and it holds a lot of wood. Be sure you use LONG lag screws and anchor into the wall studs. Put your heavy wood close to the wall, and lighter stuff out on the end of the pegs. **Q: When a level is not in use are they collapsible to save space?** A: No, they need to be installed permanently. If you wanted to remove a level, you would have to take the whole thing down and remove the level you didn't want. However, this make each level quite sturdy -- if you could collapse them, it might happen when you didn't want it to! **Q: Where can I get the "Lip" mentioned in the description to prevent roll-off?** A: No wonder you're confused - such a horrible diagram!
