Review: Excellent Bang for your buck - I own a Nikon D3400, which is a nice mirror-DSLR for the cost. I read all sorts of reviews about lenses and camera sensors, including the most excellent dxomark.com/Lenses/ reviews, and I concluded that for my needs, which includes indoor shooting in less-than-ideal lighting, and for my budget (I'm an educator), this was the right lens. My experience was that this was a good choice. Take a look at the attached candid shot I did with no setup and no editing. That's in medium light outdoors on my D3400 with ƒ/2.8, 1/1600, 35mm, ISO200. It's not perfect, but it's shot from handheld and looks pretty good unedited and with autofocus. I also used this lens for video and indoor shots for a client (so I won't share the shots) and they turned out reasonably sharp too. Better than the stock lens that comes with the D3400 in just about every way. If you want a solid prime lens (ie, it's fixed focal length so no zooming) that shoots pretty well for the Nikon D3xxx series (or any other Nikon F-Mount), this is a great buy. My refurb was a little tight on the bearings when it screws in, but that's probably a good thing because it holds securely. I did not notice any other issues with the refurb. The packaging was very protective, but not wasteful. Here's a few things to be aware of. If you are shooting on a crop DX sensor like the Nikon D3400, this 35mm lens will actually feel like a 50mm lens in practice. The switch on the side works as intended, so make sure you are set correctly for your focus needs (auto-focus won't work when the switch is set to manual!) Also, you'll want to make sure you change your AF area focus settings to what you want. I tend to use point for portraits and use the arrow buttons on the camera to set where I want the focus priority. Another thing to note about this lens is that you can't use the screw-on lens filters with this one -- not sure why, but mine wasn't threaded for this. I docked one star for the autofocus because the AF-S is not quite as fast as the newer AF-P technology. This is about as good as you can get on this kind of budget.
Review: A nice suprise - The lense came in the original box with all the original caps and paperwork. I was worried about getting a worn out, dirty discard, but was surprised when it arrived. The lense appears to be unused and very clean with no observable issues. Pictures with it were clean and well focused. Great lense for my aging D5100!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does this work with a Nikon D3000?**
A: The lens will work with any Nikon DX DSLR. Including the D3000.

**Q: Is this a good lens for indoor real estate photo???**
A: It will work but you should look into a wide angle lens for real estate photography. Look at the tokina 11-16mm , it’s a fantastic lens for indoor and you can usually find them used for the same price as new 35mm

**Q: Would this be a good lens for indoor boudoir photography?**
A: Can't be positive as I've never done that type of photography before. However the lens does pretty well indoors.

**Q: Does this come with both caps?**
A: Normally it does, mine did.. the dust cap and lens cap

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The only truly essential lens for Nikon DX cameras. A perfect tool for testing the waters!
*by R***O on May 6, 2020*

As a renewed item, it performs and appeared just about brand new. I'm not sure I couldn't be convinced it wasn't a factory new item had I not known beforehand. I had been interested in photography since the age of five, cleaning through a large supply of disposable cameras and eventually getting access to a 3.4MP Sony point-and-shoot. With the growth of cameras inside cell phones, the best camera I had access too for many years was whatever was inside my phone. Wishing to extend beyond the intuition and fundamentals of taking photos and actually understand the mechanics of shutter speed and aperture, I acquired a Nikon D3400 with a kit lens and one of these bad boys. It performs essentially like a "Nifty 50" would for a full frame camera. With a maximum aperture of f/1.8, anyone who has only used a kit lens will see a huge leap in a few areas of usability, mostly with regard to shooting indoors and in lower light scenarios. When shooting wide-open, you can also get the forever pleasant and trendy "bokeh" that gives you a more organic form of subject isolation iPhone portrait mode users can only pretend they have access to. If you close down the aperture a bit, the sharpness increases substantially, which is excellent for when you have plenty of light. Compared to a kit lens like the 18-55mm, the autofocus does not perform as quickly, though it does perform well enough. I recommend using a single point if you aren't using a camera with a more sophisticated af point array, in which case you'd have money to drop on a more sophisticated lens. Other concerns for those who've never shot on a prime lens before is that you cannot zoom, so you may encounter limitations you hadn't anticipated coming from a phone or point-and-shoot. For anyone who is truly interested in getting deeper into photography, or anyone who is looking for the perfect gift to go alongside a new Nikon APS-C DSLR for an aspiring photographer in the family, you can't spend 200 dollars in very many better ways.
