They are a little tricky to work with since they are actually thin plastic tubes, but nothing that wasn't doable. I wore them with a pair of 8 eyelet shoes (4 holes on each side) and I laced them in a cross bar pattern. There was a lot of slack left to tuck into my shoe. They would probably work even better with up to double the amount of eyelets (maybe on a pair of boots) or with a more traditional lacing pattern. He needs to have the laces very loose to get his shoes on and off and the plastic laces are not easy to work with.
