The sides are sloped so that it fits inside of the box below it tightly. If you cut it then it won’t fit into the box and you might get leakage. This is made of thick plastic and replaced a really old drain gate that had gotten brittle with pieces starting to break off everytime you needed to lift the gate. Fit perfectly, with the screw hole also perfectly aligned.
