It encompasses the entire drive and it's very thick. There are chips on both sides of the board so it might be better than the heat sink your motherboard may have come with. If you do want to use the heat sink, check your board first and make sure there is enough clearance for it underneath. Some boards put something there to support an unshrouded drive (aka pretty much all of them). If it's rubber you might be able to rip it out if you so choose.Either way, it's a beast. It holds data and hits the speeds it claims so there's not much else to say.
