Darcy as a naval captain is perhaps even more swoonworthy

*by N***S on Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2017*

This story is an old favourite of mine, I was thrilled to see it published. An unusual twist of the canon P&P background: Fitzwilliam Darcy is not the firstborn son, heir to his father and Master of Pemberley, but a second son who has made a career in the Royal Navy. He is the same utterly honourable, if proud gentleman with a penchant to take care of everyone he feels responsible for, but his different experiences change him to some extent: he knows people's worth doesn't depend on birth and social status but on their true character. As he meets Elizabeth in the canon time and place, she still finds causes to misjudge him but is also honourable enough to realize her mistakes and correct them. Various factors, including Mr. Bennet's serious illness and the misdeeds of Darcy's brother and his favourite protege George Wickham, lead to a marriage of convenience between Darcy and Elizabeth, and their blossoming love is put to trial because of his obligation to go to battle at sea. There are exciting developments where Elizabeth has to prove her worth in protecting Georgiana and securing the future of Pemberley, but will their marriage reach beyond the convenience that brought them together? Will Darcy's pride cause them to part, or will love triumph over all?An enchanting love story, beautifully written naval background and the honor and goodness of our beloved Darcy and Elizabeth make thi nstory a unique and unforgettable variation of Pride and Prejudice.

Despite how short it is, it still was a great story

There are so many reviews and I’m sure enough explain what the story is about so I’ll get to what I enjoyed (or not) about this story.Well, the cover is certainly beautiful. The story itself was also beautiful. The originality of Darcy being a second son and in the navy is refreshing. I’ve seen him as a second son before but ......[slight spoiler alert] I’ve never seen a story where we don’t see him take possession of Pemberley. Granted, it finally happens on the last page, but this story has him as a naval captain from beginning to end....[end slight spoiler alert]I loved the interactions between Darcy and Elizabeth. Because of his own status, there’s no haughtiness and only some slight angst and misunderstandings on Elizabeth’s part. The way they come together is sudden but their passion was there.I won’t spoil what happens but there’s a bit of an obstacle in the end...at least it seems so from Darcy’s POV. But it’s quickly resolved as is everything in this story. I liked it and then I sometimes didn’t.I would’ve liked to see more backstory for Georgiana and her mother. I would’ve liked more backstory on Darcy himself. We do see how he ends up in the navy and at a young age but this story could’ve used with much more fleshing out in many areas. And I’m not sure if there’s a sequel but with the way this story was rushed, it’d be nice to see a sequel. For what it was, which was a short read, I did thoroughly enjoy it and I did believe in the growing affection, passion, and love between Elizabeth and Darcy. And I definitely would read it again.

    More than a variation

This is called a P&P variation, but the only thing resembling the original is the names used and some locations. The story itself is interesting and worth reading. I like the Elizabeth and Darcy characters in this application. But to call this a variation of the original is a stretch. The people in this story have completely different personalities and circumstances.Darcy is a second son, in the navy since the age of nine, and at first encounter in the story recovering from an injury at sea that causes bouts of dizziness and eye issues necessitating green spectacles. He seems very fragile and needs a lot of assistance, far from the strong, cool, collected and perfect Darcy we're used to. Elizabeth is dealing with a gravely ill father, seems to relinquish her marriage choices without much of a fight by deciding to marry Mr. Collins if he asks, unlike our usual headstrong Lizzy. Darcy and Lizzy are thrown together at Netherfield, along with the mysterious appearance of Georgiana and her mother, who is Darcy's step mom. We learn later that Darcy's older brother is a wastrel who mistreated Georgiana, making it imperative that she be removed from Pemberly. On very short acquaintance, Darcy proposes that Elizabeth marry him so she can help him with Georgiana while he's at sea. She agrees because he seems nice and she doesn't want to marry Collins. Their correspondence fosters deeper feelings between them while he is away. The story is compelling but kind of melancholy, frustrating that the demands of war mean they can't be truly together. The reunion late in the story is very joyful and nice, but a long, long time coming. The reader has to get through a lot of separation and sadness before the reward at the end.
