Fortunately, I was able to get a tube cutter for $5.99 and cut each tube end about 1/2" and then also cut one of the threaded inserts accordingly to fit. Visualizing it - and coming to terms with the associated risk - took the most time but I was thrilled with the results; the two are perfectly parallel to the countertop. You can shorten each rod by about 1" total and still use the threading but you can't shorten the end that attaches directly to the light and you can only take 1/4" off the end that connects to the pivoting rod on the mounting end. It probably/hopefully will make more sense when you see how they're assembled. However, <> measure twice and cut once since you won't be able to return them afterward.
