Review: Why did I wait so long to get one of these??? - This thing is awesome--I am not normally so excited over a product review, especially a kitchen gadget, but this apple peeler/corer/slicer is amazing. The threaded rod is smooth and well machined, the action is easy and takes remarkably little effort (especially after I cleaned it and wiped it down with a smidge of veg oil to protect from rust). At first it comes shipped with the peeler blade (the little U-shaped strip of metal that's off to one side near the business end) set to take waaay too much peel (and apple) off. To adjust it to your taste, just loosen the handy wing-nut and set it where you want it. I personally only want the skin off, not any of the apple as well (this thing looks like it could take a good chunk of the apple with it you set it to max, which also results in a wider peel), so I set it all the way to it's minimum, putting the blade part as close to the metal support arm as possible. I think the gap is around 2mm or so. At any rate, the only other thing I had to do (besides screw on the handle, which fit like a glove, no bolt size issues here like I've seen with other brands in this price range) was loosen the wing-nut under the corer/slicer arm to get that to line up so the prongs can move freely through the coring hole. Took all of about 20 seconds to make all these adjustments and she was lined up and ready to roll. Or peel. Or core, and slice, as the case may be. If you don't want to peel the apple (pear, or potato or...? I'm going to go experiment now with what I put through this baby), simply pull the peeling arm down and don't touch the blade, right? It's sharp...I mean that's kind of common sense but I've seen reviews on other products where people complained that the thing that was supposed to be sharp was indeed sharp and instead of leaving snide comments I decided to just put a little PSA in mine. Anyway, there's a little silver bit of metal on the side of the peeling arm that swivels around to lock against the main...I don't know what to call it, but it's like the keel of a ship, the base support arm that is the backbone of this ingenious device. Look, it's pretty simple, just play with it, I'm sure if you're smart enough to turn on a computer or smartphone, navigate to desertcart, read this review (and recognize it for what it's worth), you can operate this machine. It works flawlessly. And not just on the perfect GMO apples you see in the grocery stores. I used it on a lumpy, shy little organic apple that was nowhere near "full size" like those big ones at the store, and it cored and sliced and peeled that thing like greased lightning. You just need to eyeball where the core is based on the apple's appearance, and don't worry about making it look "lined up." Mine actually looked way off center, but where the stem and the base lined up I knew had to be the core and sure enough, though it went through a little crooked, it worked like a charm and came off so easy I almost dropped it on the floor. What you're left with is a pile of thin string-peel (if you set the blade to a deeper cut, you'll get a wider peel) and a slinky-apple...or pear...I don't know as if I'd try to peel/core/and slice a potato, but it certainly seems stout enough to handle that. While that's fun to play with and impress the kids (okay, so mine weren't all that impressed and just wanted to eat the stupid apple before the dog got to it--she can smell a fresh cut apple a mile away and will move heaven and earth to get to it) I also wanted to let you know the suction base on this bad boy is impressive. I cranked the arm once with very little effort and I don't think Hercules himself could have pulled it off without taking a chunk of the countertop with it. To pull the threaded rod (and Posiden's Prongs) back through the corer and reset it for the next apple (or whatever), there's a little metal piece back by the crank handle arm that you push away from the threads, and then you can slide the whole shebang back through the coring hole and be ready for the next victim. For something that took so little effort to lock down, I was very impressed. We had a pencil sharpener with a base half this thing's size and you practically needed to be an arm-wrestling champion to lock it down...and then it would lose suction in about ten seconds. This peeler/corer/slicer was locked down until I pulled the lever back (again with very little effort, despite the holding strength). It comes with a little plastic cap to go over the set of three Posiden's Prongs there that hold the apple or whatever in place so you don't, you know, skewer yourself. Unless you were running through the house with your eyes closed, I'm not sure how you could miss these tines, but such is the world we live in I guess. As for cleaning, I simply wiped it down with a wet cloth and DRIED it to prevent rust. I'm not sure it would, but I've seen reviews on similar devices where people complained they rusted quick. I also wiped the blades down with vegetable oil like I do my cast iron skillets (after it was completely dry). It works for the skillets and my woodworking tools so it should work here. Just be sure to use a very very light amount, so it doesn't leave a residue on your food. Not that veg oil is all that bad on food, but not sure I'd want to taste it on an apple, right? Set up is very quick as the suction cup takes hold by the flip of a switch on the base. I did have to re-secure it for each apple, as my counters are not very smooth and it had a little trouble maintaining the grip, but that takes about four seconds to toggle a switch back and forth, so I wasn't bothered by it. Functionality was not affected at all and the apples cut easily with no wobbling. I like the size of it. I remembered the Pampered Chef corer/peeler/slicer that my mom had when I was a kid. It seemed really bulky. This one would fit in a shoe box. It cut really well. As I turned the crank to push the apple through, I expected to struggle as I got to the slicer. In truth, I didn't even notice that it had started slicing. I was watching the peeler mechanism and realized it was slicing, without any extra force, after the apple was half done. YAY! This earns major points for me. The instructions suggest dripping olive oil onto the moving parts. I had to watch a you tube video before I figured out how to use it. There were not any directions with mine. It is kind of hard to adjust how deep it cuts into the apple and you have to make sure you have the core cutter lined up good before peeling. Not too hard to clean up. The suction cup works ok but you have to make sure there is not anything under it. Even a grain of salt on the table will cause it not to form a good suction. I used mine a good bit and it works good. I noticed one of the adjustment screws is beginning to rust. I wanted to go back and up the rating to 4 stars. After I posted this review I was contacted by Customer Service and Gary was very nice. He wanted to make sure I was satisfied with this purchase and is sending out a brand new peeler.
