Review: Well made and functional - Pricey but it works. Ordered from desertcart warehouse. I used this to attach my Macbook Pro (older version) with the first generation thunderbolt plug to my old Canon Elura camcorder via a firewire cable. I also needed a firewire 400-800 adapter for the cable. After daisy chaining this to my laptop, iMovie was able to import my home movies archived on Mini DV tape. I also tried to order a thunderbolt-3 (USB-C) to thunderbolt-1 adapter from desertcart warehouse but received the wrong item. Will try to buy a new adapter at desertcart or at the Apple store. I can then daisy chain all the cables and adapters to my new Macbook Air (M2) via USB-C and try iMovie again.
Review: Finally connected my Motif xs8 to newer computer! - Works well combined with other adapters to connect 2017 iMac i7 to my Yamaha Motif xs8 synthesizer running cubase 13 pro. This was quite a relief to me. I'm happy!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this compatible with Thunderbolt 3?**
A: It is May 28, 2020 and I can confirm this adapter works with Thunderbolt 3 ports on a brand new MacBook Pro (MacBook Pro 13-inch 2020 with 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports). I am connecting an old Firewire external drive with (1) a fire wire cable connected to (2) this Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Firewire adapter, and then connect that adapter to a (3) Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, and then connect that adapter to a Thunderbolt 3 port on the new MacBook Pro.

**Q: My Male firewire plug has a rounded edge on one side. I cant see that on the picture??**
A: The rounded edge on your cable is Firewire 400 (also known as 1394a) with a 6-pin connector. 4-pin is the minimum (shaped like a small rectangle) and only handles data connections; the extra two pins on your 6-pin version provide power to supported devices. This adapter is for 9-pin Firewire 800 (also known as 1394b), which is backwards compatible, but you'll need a second (less expensive) adapter. Your solution will look like this: Just get an adapter head/short cable that goes from female Firewire 400 6-pin to male Firewire 800 9-pin, then plug that into this adapter, which will then be ready to use with your Thunderbolt 1/2 device. The connection will work fine, just at Firewire 400 speeds. Unfortunately, this clunkiness is the only way to go about it because Firewire was phased out in the early 2010s.

**Q: Can i connect a thunderbolt drive to the firewire 800 port on my macbook pro?**
A: I tried to connect my 2011 iMac with 1 firewire port to a LaCie 2big Dock 8TB External RAID Hard Drive (that has it's own power) using a Apple Thunderbolt 2 to FireWire Adapter, Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter and a firewire cable at the Apple Store. The drive did not appear on the Mac. But if I used a Thunderbolt 3 to USB-a cable the Lacie drive came up on the iMac.

**Q: would it work for the firewire 1394b?**
A: Yes. It's FireWire 800 (1394b) with square/rectangular 9pin female connection to male thunderbolt connection

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt 2 WORKS
*by B***E on August 23, 2021*

Official Apple products carry a price tag higher than you would think they should for adapters, cables, and peripherals. Certain peripherals and adapters are proprietary, and if you need it you have little other option. That said, the Apple Firewire 800 -> Thunderbolt 2 adapter worked flawlessly. I have an older iMac, so do NOT try using this on the newer post 2018 iMacs that take a Thunderbolt 3 connector. I needed to convert old DV Tape from a JVC video camera to my iMacs (yes, I already had a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter). Using the camera-supplied DV cord to Firewire 400, A Firewire 400->800 adapter, and the Firewire 800->Thunderbolt 2 adapter I was all set up in about 10 minutes and started on the first video. If you have older Firewire transfer devices you would like to use on an iMac or MacBook with Thunderbolt 2, this is the only choice. Thankfully, it is a GOOD choice. I highly recommend.
