I don't know about how they would last for the typical user because I manage sound systems and wrapping cables properly is one of the most important habits to develop. That aside, I highly recommend swapping out the silicon covers for Yurbuds Enhancers (you get them from JBL). It will tighten up the soundstage a bit and there's a little more bass.I have been using the Bose IEs for many years now and was looking for a pair for my brother for the longest time. We both like partial in-ear as opposed to the noise isolation in-ear, but there seems to be a lack of earphones that are partial in-ear. Then, I stumbled across these while resuming my search one day and added it to the list.The specs were impressive compared to others on my list (too bad Bose doesn't release it's specs so i had to judge it by ear). The bigger drivers are nice and produce a warmer sound stage than the Bose. I've known Audio Technica to not equalize too much with the ES7 and M50 headphones and these earphones followed that same tradition. The Bose have a reverse check-mark type of equalization (high boost of bass, little boost high), while the ATH has a flat/frown face type (slight boost of mids). Soundstage is warmer and more "real" than Bose in my opinion. Some would say that it's not as "fun" as the Bose because it doesn't give that boosted bass that people like to lean towards (boosted bass tends to give the impression of a fuller sound). I usually have the volume control set to max and turn it down when i want to focus more on what someone's saying without having to pause my music.Like the Bose, it rests in the bowl of the ear so it may take some getting used to. The Bose does have slightly higher sensitivity, but I think the ATH are one of its real competitors; I've been through so many reviews that compare isolating in-ear to the non-isolating in-ear Bose, which makes me dismiss the review altogether.I only compared specs of partial in-ears, in case you're thinking of tossing some models of in-ears at me. I always recommend people to try it out first so that they can compare for themselves rather than base it on a review made by someone who may have a different set of preferences. I am not an audiophile and get turned-off by strong bass. My headphones and earbuds are purchased for their ability to reproduce sounds naturally without a strong emphasis on bass. For the price tag, the ATH-CHX7 meets my expectation. The earbuds may look heavy on paper but they do not feel like so when I am wearing them. Of course, they are heavier than the Bose IE2 that I own. I have not tried using the ATH-CHX7 with my Android phone. I can use my other iPhone-certified headphones with my phone without any problem. As such, the ATH-CHX7 is dedicated for the walkman.Another fact that I like is that the ATH-CHX7 is NOT an in-ear type. I never find in-ear buds comfortable for more than an hour. I can wear the ATH-CX7 for a few hours without any discomfort. I do not need the sound isolation as I use the ATH-CX7 indoor in an office environment.The size of the ATH-CHX7 is nothing to write home about. It is gigantic for earbuds. Of course, it takes a lot of realestate to house a 14+mm driver. It takes some explanation for others to understand the size. The shape is futuristic looking nonetheless.Should I go with a balanced armature earbud instead? The answer is probably no due to price.
