The traditional design with the retro-style cardboard box has remained virtually unchanged since 1948. The 8900 pencil has a high-quality appearance thanks to its fine lacquer finish. One box contains twelve 8900 pencils in HB hardness in unsharpened form. Review: 5 Stars - Fantastic Quality - 5 stars, fantastic quality. Have used Staedtler for years and found quality decreasing - these are a great alternative. Review: Great unless you get a wonky batch - Used to love these pencils, i've purchased a few boxes as I leave them scattered about the house, just the right hardness, good quality. However the last box I purchased half the leads are off centre and they can't be sharpened as you end up with a slither of wood up one side whatever you do. Frustrating at this price. Emailed seller but no response as yet. The Mono is an artist grade pencil -- it's smoother, quieter at the same grade. The 8900 says 'For General Writing' on them. Keep in mind that it's not a Japanese pencil. It's made in Vietnam. A good pencil for 6 bucks, though. **Q: How hard or soft is the graphite? I want to use this for note-taking, so I'd like something with a relatively harder and darker graphite.** A: This is about the softest pencil grade normally sold for writing. It is dark, easy to erase and doesn't cut into soft paper. But it will also smear easily. That's the trade off with soft pencils. I think it is perfect for newspaper crossword puzzles and pretty good for drawings where you want shading. But for note taking, you will probably find a 2H or HB grade better even though they are lighter and harder to erase. **Q: Are all 12 pencils in 2b lead? title says 2b, but product description mentions hb, b, and 2b...kindly clarify** A: I bought 12 pencils with b hardness - all in one box. Also 2b hardness - again all 12 in one boxLiz Lynam **Q: I want to be sure. Is thIs the price for 12 pencils?** A: Yes, this price for 12 pencils. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 Stars - Fantastic Quality *by B***S on 16 April 2026* 5 stars, fantastic quality.
