If it's out of focus or too dark you're not going to see anything on your screen.As of writing this I've had this, "microscope," for two days. I'm pretty sure that isn't going to make a lot of difference. When you're talking about electronic devices they usually either work or they don't. If something is wrong with them it's usually wrong right out of the box.So far I'm having a great time and so are my kids. This isn't a laboratory tool. It's a toy. You don't get a laboratory tool for under twenty bucks. If that's what you're expecting from this you're a fool. It is, however, a great toy for the kids and I'm enjoying it, too.I'm using it on Linux Mint 17.3. I tried using VLC and Entangle to view the images from it. Neither one worked. VLC saw the device but wouldn't produce any images. Entangle didn't even see it as a video device.Cheese works great aside from the strange problems when you push the physical, "SNAP," button on the side of the device. For me, it just kept taking photos every time I right-clicked anything in Cheese or clicked the Cheese menu. This, really, make no difference at all in using the device. You're going to be far better off to click the photo button in the Cheese window than you are to try to use the, "SNAP," button on the camera. Trying to press that button without moving the camera is just going to be an exercise in futility. Very slight movements translate to instant blurring under magnification. It's not the fault of the device, it's just a fact of physics.The focal length is far better than I had any right to expect, to be honest. I think it will be no trouble to use this for soldering once I've built and/or 3D printed a better stand for that purpose. The stand included is fine for playing with it and looking at things but it wont' work for soldering. It's not being sold as a soldering microscope though so if you thought it was going to be perfect for that purpose out-of-the-box you're asking way too much for your twenty bucks. Get real.The rotating part that is labeled, "50X < > 1000X"...? Yeah, that doesn't change the magnification. That's for focusing on whatever you're looking at.So... I don't know for sure but...I'm teaching my kids not to bang the thing around. I'm sure it's fairly delicate. How could it not be? It's connected to my computer and if the varmints want to look at something they can do it while I'm there.It's got a protective cap for a reason, kids! If you're not using it put the cap back on!That USB setup looks a bit on the fragile (and unofficial) side. You probably shouldn't try to plug it in twenty times a day if you want it to keep working for more than three days.I haven't tried the, "ZOOM," button with Cheese. I didn't even notice it until I started writing this. I don't expect it to work, to be honest. I don't really care, in fact. It's already doing what I want it to do.The pictures are what I got from Cheese using this camera. I'm pretty impressed.They are: A cloth napkin, a surface mount resistor that is about 1mm long, and a 2mm LED (those wires are thinner than a hair by a lot).You can bet that if this thing quits working in the next thirty days I'll be back to change my review. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good value *by A***T on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on November 28, 2019* It took a minute to figure out but I think my grandson will love being able to look at his rocks on his phone!
