This book, combined with Hoek & Bray's (now Wyllie & Mah's) Rock Slope Engineering, provides me with everything I need for my work. It's an indispensable reference. With California's extremely variable geology and the dwindling supply of flat project sites, I'm regularly hit with new situations. This book has always provided a suitable example and clear explanation of how to solve the problem. I have no formal engineering education, yet I can still follow this book through nearly all of its explanations. I do have 20 years of professional experience working with civil and geotechnical engineers though. Bottom line: This is a great reference for the professional engineering geologist or geotechnical or civil engineer. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Complete rock mechanics book *by A***R on Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2001* When I took rock mechanics at Berkeley we used Prof. Goodman's book (of course), but I have found this book to be far more user friendly and complete. Although an understanding of geology and earth processes is essential for the subject to be understandable, this book and the accompanying book of worked problems will teach you the subject well and thoroughly. I just wish they'd make the accompanying book of worked problems in paperback becuase it's too expensive! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Ausgezeichnetes Buch über Felsmechanik! *by C***N on Reviewed in Germany on January 8, 2010* Das Buch wurde von zwei bekannten Somitäten des Faches Felsmechanik verfasst: Prof. Hudson und Prof. Harrison. Es beschreibt ausführlich die theoretischen Grundlagen der Felsmechanik, sehr präzise aber nicht langweilig. Einige Aspekte der Ingenieurgeologie, die zur Bestimmung der mechanischen Parameter des Materials Gestein sind ebenfalls umrissen. Ein seltenes Buch, in einem Fach in dem seit Prof. Leopold Müller's Bücher kaum noch was nennenswertes erschienen ist. Zusammen mit der praktischen Bücher herusgegeben von Prof. Hudson, ist dieses Werk ein Meilenstein für die Felsmechanik. Prof Hudson ist der Vorsitzende des Internationalen Gesellschaft für Felsmechanik (ISRM), die von Prof. Leopold Müller gegründet wurde.
