Definitive Wilson retrospective revealing a fine back catalogue

*by D***F on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 18 October 2019*

Demon Music continue their wonderful and varied series of "Gold" compilations looking at lesser- known artists or those who have fallen out of the public's eye with a fabulous 60 track album covering the settled Brunswick career of Jackie Wilson. Wilson is long overdue a favourable reassessment thanks to a stellar career in the US with 54 Top 100 singles in that country. Wilson's back catalogue was out of print for years following his heart-rending health issues from 1975 until his untimely passing in 1984 aged just 49, and sadly he was lesser appreciated in the UK - here this three CD set puts the record straight and shows what a major talent he was. With so much material to pick from not every single makes the cut, and the strength of the compilation is borne out by jus three album tracks, one per disc being included - but what has been chosen shows off the man at his best, particularly on hidden gem of the collection "The Who Who Song" which I hadn't heard in years and was buried away on a b-side. In fact 10 b-sides are excellently chosen, some of them non-album tracks, sensibly making this compilation of interest to the Wilson collector. The set starts with Wilson's best known tracks in the UK, "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher", "I Get The Sweetest Feeling" and "Reet Petite", giving listeners a superb opening salvo and setting up the sort of less familiar material well - stylistically if you know and like those three famous tracks rest assured there's plenty of material of similar quality here to enjoy. I really didn't know much about Wilson's deeper catalogue before purchasing this set and on listening that's been a huge oversight in my musical education. The set isn't arranged chronologically, rather it bounces about between 1957 and 1975 in a very pleasing, stylistic manner. There's so much here of high quality, it's no wonder Wilson had so many hits in America. Other highlights for me were "Since You Showed Me How To Be Happy", a 1967 single, and "It's All Over" from 1973 - absolutely top drawer soul with Northern overtones. These are standouts in a fabulous collection that keeps on giving. At just £5 this is surely the definitive retrospective of Wilson's career and reveals many lost gems which will reward repeat listening. I've thoroughly enjoyed listening to this collection from start to finish, everything from toe-tappers to stuff that makes me want to swing my pants - a highly unusual scenario! Excellent with a Lonely Teardrops surprise!!

*by G***T on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 14 April 2022*

An excellent complication and brilliant value. 3CD's!!!! Re Lonely Teardrops. It was part written by Berry Gordy as a ballad AND this is what you get here NOT the original chart topper. In one respect disappointing, in another WOW!! A master tape mix up or digital file transfer mistake???? You could download the original from The Very Best Of..........to have this version it is worth splashing the cash:)

    Terrible Cover, Good Music

*by J***T on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 25 November 2021*

Music is fine, CDs play OK.Arrived in shrink-wrap looking pristine. After getting out the CDs to play them, cover is ripped in 2 places :-( And I'm overly careful with that sort of thing."+" is it's not made of plastic..."-" is that the cardboard cover is 'single use'
