During the summer season, it would be okay not to have pathway/garden lights. However, these are must-have items during the winter season. These are almost indestructible - survived harsh New England winter and occasional summer hurricanes (fallen branches and acorns). During the power outage, these were life beacons - our driveway looks like a runway.
