I don’t have the budget to go for high end gear and I’m definitely not what you would call an audiophile, I just like good sound and good build quality. I was completely out of touch with what’s on the market these days so I did a fair bit of research online, reading reviews from What Hi-Fi etc plus many customer opinions. I don’t do a lot of streaming as I still favour CD’s, I have a large collection and also a fair amount of vinyl, so I opted for a straight replacement for my old amp with no frills. I set my budget at Β£500 and eventually narrowed it down to the AXA35 and the Marantz PM6007. They both get 5 stars everywhere so I made my decision based on What Hi-Fi saying that the Cambridge sounds more β€œnatural”. I took the opportunity to buy new speaker cable as mine was 30 years old and looking a bit flimsy around the banana plugs. My speakers (Ruark Icons) are bi-wired so the cable wasn’t cheap, it’s very heavy duty and I really have no idea whether it makes any difference to the sound quality or not, I tend to be a little cynical and think probably not. I received the amp (and cable) within 24 hours and had it all plugged in, set up and ready to go in about an hour. The first thing that struck me is how aesthetically pleasing it is, its very sleek, minimal and classy looking. It also weighs a fair bit, making it feel like there’s quality there. I really like the dark silver front panel. The source is selected by five buttons, the first four accept any line level analogue input and the fifth is phono for a turntable. There is a record output on the back which connects to the input of recording devices (like the tape function on old amps) I happen to own a Phillips CD recorder so that feature may come in very handy and I was pleasantly surprised they still bother including this on modern gear. On the front panel there is a 3.5mm aux input for quick connection to phones, tablets, iPods, laptops etc which again, will probably come in useful (it overrides source button 1) There is no digital/optical input which may put some people off, but it doesn’t bother me. Bass, treble and balance are all accessed by pressing the menu button and then adjusting via the volume knob, it’s very very easy, but I probably won’t even touch these ever, I never did on my old amp. The headphone socket cancels the speakers when you plug into it, which is logical I suppose. The display is small and unobtrusive, just bright enough to read, which again, I think is classy looking. Finally there’s a remote which seems rudimentary but functional, it’s not something I’ll bother with as I sit next to my hi-fi. So the most important thing then; the sound. Straight away it sounds a lot brighter than my old Arcam ever did, the highs are crisp and far more audible. The bottom end sounds fine, I did read one or two reviews saying it’s lacking in that department slightly but so far, to my ears it sounds good. It’s 35 watts per channel as opposed to 50 on the old amp but it’s plenty loud and powerful enough for my room. One oddity (to me anyway) is that the volume level is shown on the screen in decibels, meaning the lower the number, the higher the volume. I would have preferred a simple incremental reading but I’m nit-picking. For this reason I don’t really know if I’m having to turn it up more than my old amp or not but that doesn’t really matter. For my little room and my smallish speakers it seems perfect, it’s been nowhere near full volume. I would not like to guess how it would cope with big speakers and/or a big room, you would need to read other reviews to find that out. The real test will be that of time; how long it lasts and how consistent the performance is but up to now I feel like I’ve made a good choice. It hasn’t broken the bank so I may throw caution to the wind and replace my aging CD player too in the not too distant future. Review: Great Value - I am recently rediscovering my fifty year old vinyl collection and needed a decent amplifier/speaker/turntable set up that didn't break the bank. I chose the Cambridge Audio AXA35 over the AXA25 as I wanted a bit of power in reserve and It certainly delivers that and more - but I don't really need 50 plus watts per channel. I've attached a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 speakers and they sound great, punching well above their weight - so, in my experience, a good pairing. It's a great, no nonsense, amplifier. I did find the digital readout for the volume slightly counter intuitive - 0 db for maximum seems wrong until you realise this is a minus figure (explained in the user manual available on line). My old vinyl sounds like new. Sound is very clear, amazing depth, no distortion with plenty of power in reserve. I have also connected an old BlueRay/DVD player so I can play the occasional CD and that works very well too. Remote control is a useful feature. I've not tried the Bluetooth connection yet.
