Review: Very engaging, but batteries drained fast - I used this as a Middle School Math Teacher about 3-4 years ago (I am no longer in education). we just had a set collecting dust in a closet, when I decided I would put it to use. I created some PowerPoint stuff using state test prep materials. I found that using PowerPoint 2003 worked much better than PowerPoint 2007, but then again, these could have been old clickers that were purchased before Office 2007 came out). I assigned students specific clickers by number, so that I could use their names on screen when doing things like showing a Top Ten list, or when showing on screen who has yet to respond (all very easy to do with a Windows-compatible remote control and a hotkey program). My notes: 1. The students had a lot of fun using the clickers when reviewing assignments. No one could avoid paying attention, because I could see who was failing to respond, or who was clicking randomly just to play around. 2. The students and I all liked being able to see what percent of the class picked each response before the correct answer was finally revealed. My favorite scenarios were when two answers were nearly 50-50, or when one WRONG answer got the vast majority of the class fooled. The class had a stunning visual cue that it was time to pay close attention to that particular solution. 3. It saved class time, when I would get 100% success on certain questions, allowing me to skip the explanation rather than waste everybody's time telling them something they already know. My only issue was the speed at which I would have to replace batteries. Maybe it was because I had three, sometimes four, sets of students using the clickers almost daily, but every day I would have to replace at least a couple clicker batteries. Perhaps the middle schoolers were simply playing with the squishy buttons, causing the batteries to drain quickly, but make sure you have plenty of replacement CR2032 batteries (the flat circular batteries, about the size of a quarter). The benefits of these devices far outweigh the negatives. If your school is willing to purchase this for you, definitely take advantage of it!
