They recommended 1/3 to a whole bag to start a fire. My first test was with less than 1/8 of a bag. I used a round ferro stick for striking. I was able to strike the spark, and get a sustained hot burn for about 6 to 7 seconds. My second test involved the same amount of magnesium, and dried moss as tinder. This ignited on the first strike again, and was able to properly catch the moss, and generate embers for me to feed. The only drawback I found was that the magnesium dust gets into the small ziplock surfaces, so I recommend bringing a larger bag to hold the magnesium pouch in once opened. It was recommended to make contact with flame for at least five seconds if using a lighter. Honestly, if I have a working lighter for five seconds, I don't really need the magnesium. It struck fine with ONE SPARK from the ferro stick, reliably. No matches or lighter required.
