OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS: Set the top (small) o-ring located on the plunger rod on zero, down against the instrument's flange; or set the o-ring on the desired force. Holding the instrument firmly, press slowly against the door at a point approximately handle-high, and 30 inches away from the door's hinges. Read the amount of force required to open the door on the plunger scale closest to the bottom of the small o-ring. Support it in a vertical position on a firm surface then simply place an item you know is five pounds, such as a dumbell, on top of it. Used the five pound example since that is the threshold for ADA doors. You can do the same thing with objects of other weights to get a range of test points. **Q: Does this also shut the door** A: No this will not shut the door. This tool is used to test the pound of pressure to push the door open or pull the door open to comply with the ADA act that a person with limited ability to open a door. **Q: Are the marks on the gauge just a sticker or are they painted on?** A: They are silk-screen printed / painted on. My minor issue is the rubber o-ring to mark the door pressure. That o-ring will crack and break off over time and would need to get a replacement o-ring at the hardware store.
