Review: 4 Degrees Above Zero - Homeless Cat is Comfy & Warm! - My K & H Cat House is 2 1/2 years old. Many months ago, a very timid, stray cat became "a regular" visitor to my farmer's porch. I feed and water him (her?) daily and provide bedding and blankets for it to sleep upon. When the forecast called for the first severe Arctic blast to hit, I ordered the K & H Extreme Weather electric Heated Bed w/ free Fleece Cover. I paid for super fast delivery, and even in M.L King'sBirthday, it arrived in less than 48 hours. I tested it out as the instructions say, and it felt warm....not dangerously hot, but soothing. Fine! So I took it out to the porch to put in the car house, but it was about 2" longer than the cat house. I had to improvise in order to keep it lying flat on bottom of the car house. I folded the back walk, extending the length of the floor. I sealed the (now shorter) rear wall with duct tape to keep draftiness to a minimum. It worked out very well, with my porch being covered, but not fully enclosed. Because this cat is a total scaredy cat who scurried under the porch, even when I approach to feed him.... I keep the front AND rear openings open, with the plastic flaps taped up and open so he won't feel trapped - ever! I put his canned food inside alobg the corner. Both to keep food from freezing, and to lur him in the house to discover the fact that it is now heated. My fears that he wouldn't figure it out were unfounded, as the 1st overnight temps were in the mid teens, F , with a biting west wind howling between 20 - 30 m.p.h. giving the wind chill values of 4 above to 5 below zero, F. And when it started to get light out the next morning I was thrilled to find him in his heated sanctuary, where he came out and scurried under the porch so I could remove the empty feed bowl and replace it with breakfast. I leave the dry food out of his house so that there is as much room as possible. The suggestion I have us measure heated flooring / pad or buy the K & H Heated Outdoor House, to avoid my minor mismeasuring mishap. But I already had an unheated version of the house. I live 20 miles north of Boston, as I write this it's 19 degrees with wind chill value of 5 degrees. The elect. chord is housed inside sturdy metal, so it's nearly impossible for a critter to chew at it. The free Fleece Cover that comes w/ unit is nice, but attaches with elasticized bands on each corner. I opted to purchase K & H Extreme Weather cover for the unit. It slips on, and zips closed, completely enveloping the unit, which is made from a sturdy plastic. The zipping cover was only 8 or 9 bucks, with no worries that it will come off. The material is soft and breathable and made for this item, as well. I recommend this product, as the little stray has truly been a constant resident during this extremely brutal Arctic cold snap! So happens, a big N'orEaster is in the forecast, and could dump a foot + in my area in the next 48 - 72 hours. Since my porch is exposed, I will get some heavy guage, clear plastic sheeting to protect a large portion of the porch; using a few small nails along the inner area from the roof to below the floor, covering the lattice. This will keep the cat's sanctuary free from snow, and prevent water from saturating the car house or the electrical aspect of the heated flooring and fleecy covering. Monetarily, these products are reasonably priced. The stray cat isn't as well off as my 2 house cats, or my 1 indoor / outdoor cat but is FAR BETTER OFF than the countless, helpless animals who are exposed to howling frigid winds and zero degrees Fahrenheit temps. The picture I included was during the first full day, proving how I shouldn't have worried about whether the stray would figure out what to do!! The light blue sliver of color inside on left is the feed bowl I tucked inside. Like I said, even on this severely cold, cloudy day, the canned wet food stayed moist but totally unfrozen. Even though the unit is completely encased in a very sturdy plastic, I do not put water in there, just to be 100% safe! I am very very happy with the K & H products!
Review: love it - I've used this for two winters now and it works perfectly. It is a very hard plastic pad with a thin fleece cover on it, but for outdoor cats, its fine. One of the things I like the most about it is that its only warm when there's a cat on the pad. When the cat isn't on it, there is a very slight warmth (like room temp), so its not ice cold, but when the cat lays on it, it heats up. Great for saving electricity. The first year I used it, it was in a custom built shelter in my unheated garage. The cat that was using it spent many nights in the box with no complaints. Halfway through the winter she transitioned to an indoor/outdoor cat and ended up spending several nights in the garage when she didn't come home before I went to bed. Now she's fat and lazy and only catches the mice that make it in the house. However, two new strays have moved into my pole barn, so I moved the pad into one of the houses I have out there. The pad is a little small for the house, but still works fine, and one of the cats has started spending all night in the house. The fact that its plastic with an easily removable cover is a plus since one of the male cats sprayed inside the house. All I had to do was wipe down the plastic pad, and wash the cover and it was good to go. I don't think this is a good hot pad for indoor cats because they're used to softer things, but the outdoor cats seem to appreciate it when the temps are in the negative numbers and there's two feet of snow on the ground.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this safe to lay in straw bedding? I have an outdoor feral cat house with straw inside.**
A: We also shelter feral's, Yes I have placed one in a Styrofoam shelter that has straw in it. No problems and cat loves it. I placed it on the bottom, straw on top, works well, cat tunnels in making it's own comfort shape. Good luck Winter is here!

**Q: can I put this pad on top of my kitty’s current soft fluffy bed?**
A: Yes. Just be sure you have the cover that comes with it on. I use mine on our front porch on two rocking chairs that have cushions on them. I lay the pad on top of the cushions and my outdoor kitties love them. The cover is washable, as well. I can' t say enough good things about this pad. Many of my friends have purchased it on my recommendation and not one has been unhappy.

**Q: can this be placed under a cat bed or does it need to be on top of the fleece bed?**
A: I think it needs to be placed on top for the thermostat to work properly. K&H says not to use any covering except for the fleece cover they sell. If you put it underneath the pet bed you could damage the unit. I use these pads for feral cats it outdoor cat shelters on top of other softer pads and they work well.

**Q: Is this bed bendable because it looks pretty solid and its slighlty to big for my feral cat house? please let me know, thank you?**
A: Hi. I bought this bed this fall for my elder cat. It is rigid and really not very bendable. He has a small hut that he likes to sleep in and I bought this bed in the 'petite' size. It was plenty big enough for his little hut and has performed very will this winter! I hope this helps!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ K&H Small Pet Mat with fleece cover
*by C***R on December 19, 2025*

This small hard mat with the soft fleece cover fits perfectly in the space I have and heats up very quickly, so I put a small bowl of dry food on a corner of it (the K&H dual heated bowl holds wet food and water). More importantly, the stray cat I am feeding loves it. The soft white fleece cover keeps the mat warmer and soaks up the moisture from kitty's feet, but it is very thin. I would love to have a thicker cover (perhaps in grey or a darker color) for this mat since stray kitty likes to eat and then take a long nap on the mat. The cover machine washes and dries very well, but the cold, rainy, snowy, Michigan weather makes the kitty's paws very dirty, which shows on the white mat. I would definitely buy this mat again. It is perfect for the space I have. The safety features are, in my opinion, the best in the industry.
