I wish the top shelf were detachable, in case I can,t always use such a tall countertop unit. But it's large enuf to accommodate 2 mid size appliances. I needed something largish to go over a large toaster oven. The distance between the tiers (about 16"& 11") gives you the height to store things taller than spice jars or canned goods--unusual in kitchen shelving units. It seems to be well built and fairly attractive, for laminate. Now I just have to fight my natural inclination to pile too much stuff there, & let it get messy-looking:) it's very sturdy.
