A: I never turn mine off.  The drives sleep after a few minutes of inactivity.  It is otherwise completely quiet.  Depends upon your setup.

**Q: difference between 500u3 and 500c3 models?**
A: the 500u3 uses USB3 connection.  The 500c3 uses the USB-typeC connection.
