Holm and Thanhhà Lại , about an immigrant girl inspired by the sport she loves to find her own home team—and to break down any barriers that stand in her way. Shirley Temple Wong sails from China to America with a heart full of dreams. Her new home is Brooklyn, New York. America is indeed a land full of wonders, but Shirley doesn't know any English, so it's hard to make friends. Then a miracle happens: baseball! It's 1947, and Jackie Robinson, star of the Brooklyn Dodgers, is a superstar. Suddenly Shirley is playing stickball with her class and following Jackie as he leads the Brooklyn Dodgers to victory after victory. With her hero smashing assumptions and records on the ball field, Shirley begins to feel that America is truly the land of opportunity—and perhaps has also become her real home. Review: Great Immigrant Book. - As an immigrant to this country, I laughed when the main character recited The Pledge of Allegiance as "I pledge allegiance to the frog..." That's EXACTLY how I recited it until the classmate next to me explained that the word was flag, not frog. I loved this book with its immigrant experience! Review: Poignant Story for Kids and Grown-ups Alike - Good quality product, careful packaging, and quick delivery. A great tale of an immigrant child finding a hero and a life in a new place. ## Technical Specifications | Specification | Value | |---------------|-------| | Best Sellers Rank | #23,797 in Books ( See Top 100 in Books ) #12 in Children's Asian & Asian American Books #24 in Children's Baseball Books (Books) #88 in Children's Black & African American Story Books | | Customer Reviews | 4.6 out of 5 stars 642 Reviews | ## Images ![In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson: A Classic Sports Story About Baseball, Friendship, and Finding Home in 1947 Brooklyn for Kids (Ages 8-12) - Image 1](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/814WRzCqZNL.jpg) ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great Immigrant Book. *by K***R on April 23, 2026* As an immigrant to this country, I laughed when the main character recited The Pledge of Allegiance as "I pledge allegiance to the frog..." I cannot stress enough how much I loved it. I ordered this for my mom because she is an elementary English teacher. She bought this as one of the books to read with her class and is so glad she did. She has just adored this book! It is so cute and very accurate. She has been able to plan lots of fun activities with her students including a rewards system with candy and baseball cards, just like from the story. She also was able to bring fortune cookies to class and the kids enjoyed that, too. She has had so much fun with this book and it has been really cool for her to see the students enjoy the book and have some fun reading and learning about a girl their age from a different culture and time. She also got to talk with the students about the Chinese zodiac and explain to them what that is and what it means. She has had a blast with the book and so have the kids! If you're considering getting this for your child or someone you know, I highly recommend it!! It is so cute and this book is great. Very well written and very appropriate for elementary school kids! Give it a shot! You won't regret it :) --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.tn/products/1593440-in-the-year-of-the-boar-and-jackie-robinson-classic](https://www.desertcart.tn/products/1593440-in-the-year-of-the-boar-and-jackie-robinson-classic) --- *Product available on Desertcart Tunisia* *Store origin: TN* *Last updated: 2026-10-13*
