Para-cord and what you can do with it!

*by C***O on Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2013*

The bracelets are nice. I have several as there is close to 12-15' of para-cord in there! The reason you might want to consider throwing a few packs of para-cord in the 'Go Bag' in back of your car/truck is simple: if you wrap 6 to 8 strands together you can pull a buddy out of ditch/mud/snow bank, etc. As one strand is good for 550 lb.'s, rounded down to 500 lb's x7 strands is 3,500 lb's of pulling capacity....just measure TWICE and cut once or DO NOT cut at all and wrap 9x tightly! Second reason you want this in your Go Bag is to aid you or a family member should anyone suffer a deep cut, gash, compound fracture and the need for a tourniquet arises or a splint is needed with some fresh cut branches sized down to the length necessary to run along each side AND front and back of the injured limb. Then you can apply the first strand of para-cord and your family member or you....will be grateful if you need to walk on your injured leg, utilize lightly your hurt arm, as para-cord wears against the skin and creates a nasty chaff w/out the two extra splints. Third reason you need para-cord in your Go-Bag is what is inside the para-cord....7 strands of fine woven strands that when carefully removed, make a sweet fishing line....just do not overly snap the cord to set the hook as a decent sized fish will snap your line. Should that happen, then look at the positives, you have a nice fishing hole! Triple up on the next line! Measure TWICE, cut once. And the next fish will not get away. Lastly, and I hope you never need para-cord for making a sled/litter to place a loved one on or a buddy because it obviously means they are badly injured. Just remember to cut your branches for the center from shoulder width at top and widen as you go to the feet. About every 9-12" you'll need a branch and the rails should be at least one foot longer than the injured person based on how you plan to tow them out...or if you are fortunate enough to have enough people, carry them out! Carrying them out means your center weight bearing splints can be equal length. Having to drag a litter requires a gradual widening so you do not lose control and tip them over crossing rough ground. Having the proper knives in your Go-Bag certainly helps making short work of constructing a sled/litter as you need to make 1/4" grooves in your cross splints and rails! That will secure the para-cord AND the splint branches you cut; in place! Otherwise, they will slide all over the place. Which side do the groves go on? Look at your sled/litter and determine which way the weight is going to be conveying as you move over land. The other thing you may want to consider is wrapping the two ends....handles, you will be pulling on w/para-cord, not just for better grip but to help ease your hands if you have some serious distance to trek. Once again, you'll need grooves at the base and top to set the para-cord at the base and wrap tight to the top of the length you want the para-cord handles to be. Square knots will be fine and conserve your para-cord usage. Know your square knots! Lastly, if you need to trap some game, nothing works better than a net made out of para-cord over a nice hole about 5' to 6' deep....yeah, I know, where do I get the shovel? Right here on Amazon. Either the GLOCK or standard military style shovel will work. Best to have two in case you have two people who can dig. As for knives, right here on Amazon, you can choose USMC Ka-Bar w/serrations and a nice compact axe. If Amazon carry's SOG's axe version or GLOCK 's either or both will do....plus grab the 36" portable pull saw that looks like a metal string....handy item. A smaller blade with a sharp edge is always handy. The sharpening kit you should buy is made by Spyderco and is a slick knife sharpening system that fits right into your Go-Bag w/a footprint of about 9" long, 5" wide and about 1 3/4" high. READ the directions. ALWAYS use the guards! The edge it'll put on knives will blow your mind! You'll be sharpening scissors, garden shears, as it is that good! And it is right here on Amazon! Please excuse any typo's....big mitts...little keyboard. Be safe. Be ready for unexpected stuff to happen as things just have a way of happening unexpectedly when you are trekking through the brush or mountain trails. ( the whole you dug to catch the game? You made a nice fisherman's style net and carefully pegged your para-cord over the whole. You threw some leaves, needles, small dead sticks all over it and placed a nice treat right smack in the middle....personally, PBJ is my choice, others prefer a baloney sandwich, so do both! When the boar/deer/rabbit/bear/ doe - I will not kill a doe, I'll ward them off with a pebble or two- call me what you like, or think if I was hungry enough, I'd kill a doe, but I will not. Nor a baby bear. I've seen enough blood to last 10 lifetimes and if I take any more, it'll be matured game. You do as you wish. Your para-cord will make nice rig to hang your game and clean it and skin it w/ just a 24" to 36" , 1" round stick/splint.) You can buy those heavy duty water-proof matches, fire starters or personally, I prefer a Bic in my pocket, and another half dozen or so in the Go Bag inside a ziplock bag. To each his own.

Mil-Spec paracord has a core of 7 triple-twist yarns. This paracord has a core of 7 double-twist yarns. This is a common cost cutting measure for commercial paracord. The terms "Government supplier" and "Type III" are used to cover this fact. I cannot say if the two twists contain as much nylon as the mil-spec three twists, but anyway there is a difference between this and military paracord. That is why I rated it 4 stars rather than 5.That said, there isn't anything actually wrong with this cord. As far as I can tell, it's 100% nylon. When a flame is applied, it melts, but does not catch fire or support a flame as polyester or cotton would.I don't have the ability to accurately test it's breaking strength, but a single length with a loop at each end held my entire weight suspended from a tree branch. With clothes, shoes and the stuff in my pockets, I happen to weigh about 225 pounds. The cord stretched noticeably, but took no visible damage (besides surface abrasion from contact with the tree branch).Based on my findings, I am willing to conclude that this paracord is worthy of household and outdoor utility use. It is ideal for bracelets, lanyards, zipper pulls, tent construction, critter snares, trip wires, boot laces...I'm gonna use some to replace the starter rope on my lawnmower. I would NOT trust this cord to the weight of a human life.Bottom line: This is good civilian utility cord. It is NOT a military or aviation grade product. One star is deducted for being dishonestly advertised as a military/aviation grade product while it is not.

It's paracord. Got to make boot laces and so far it has fit the bill. Got plenty left over for any cordage needs. Always keep some on hand. Good stuff.
