## Description

What It Is Years ago, many RNC users pined for less invisible compression and requested that FMR Audio offer a more "colorful" compressor, suitable for bass guitar, drums and other sources in need of added sonic texture. In response, our designer went to the RNC archives and resurrected a version of RNC software that had been rejected for release because it wasn't invisible enough! The result: a compressor reminiscent of some classic opto compressors used to just "level" the signal rather than tame every transient. To celebrate the RNLA's sonic "color", a bright red knob* was chosen as a visual metaphor. Although the most recent version ships with a less ostentatious red-striped knob (not shown), the RNLA's sonic color remains bolder than ever... How It Sounds "Thick" and "gooey" is how some of our customer's have described the RNLA's sound. The RNLA is, admittedly, much "gentler" and not as apt to grab'n'run with the signal. Like an old-timey photocell, the RNLA is a little resistant to responding right away, but requires the signal to be there for a while to get the photocell to act. This action yields a soft musicality to the compressor's action that adds a desirable characteristic to the source signal. How It's Done The RNLA and the RNC share much of the same hardware, but run different algorithms to achieve the desired effect. The RNLA exercises the well-known dictum (among dynamic processor designers) that, after the static characteristics of the signal path, the main contributors to a processor's sound are the shapes of the attack & release envelopes. The RNLA's software then transforms the sidechain signal into a drive signal for the VCA that both slows things down a bit and totally reshapes the crisp and quick action of the RNC's "normal" mode. This reshaping (and slow down) are the primary sonic drivers behind the RNLA's "thick and gooey" sound!

Review: A great addition to my studio - Does it add color? Yes. Is that color slightly dark? Yes. Does it glue a mix together? Yes. Do I love it? Also, yes. I admittedly, have limited experience with analog compressors. I've had a Alesis 3630 sitting in my rack for years. Mostly used for gating drums while tracking. Other than that, I disliked the pumping it seemed to give on any track I tried to put through it. This review, however, is for the RNLA. It's night and day to my 3630. On everything I've used on, I've liked the results. I love how the "log" function lets transients through. To my ears, it darkens a bit too much but that is nothing that a little eq doesn't mend. (I almost always eq with plugin compressors so this is not any different.) This compressor has huge band for the buck and to be able to run it in stereo... A great addition to my studio.
Review: Maybe the best bang for the buck compressor out there - Bought this specifically for bass guitar. Excellent! Easy to dial in. It fattened up my fretted bass sound, and with a couple of tweaks really brought out the mwah tone from my fretless. Great piece of gear for a easy to take price. Next step is to try it out on a stereo drum mix on my Tascam model 16 recorder. If you need a compressor, get one of these now. You will not be disappointed.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: can I use for record vocals?**
A: yes you can use it for vocals. it has a little bit of "color" but that's a good thing. it truly sounds great on everything.

**Q: the compressor don't have switch! always be mode turn on?**
A: The compressor is always on when plugged in and you have a signal path inserted through it. You can press the bypass switch to allow signal to pass through as normal (non-compressed) or you can unplug the patch cables that you are running to it from your audio interface or mixer. It's an inexpensive yet very excellent compressor.

**Q: Can I use this as a limiter for my in ear monitors?**
A: I like my RMR leveling amp. While it would probably do a good job at controlling levels. Its designed to add coloration to the sound that might not be desirable for a monitoring application. So far, I use mine to control dynamics and add interest for a direct injected bass guitar (I mix with an analogue mixer). The original FMR Really Nice Compressor would work better a monitoring system.

**Q: So this is a compressor? What is the difference between this and the RNC?
[Updated] Because Amazon messes with my grammar.**
A: Yes, it's a compressor! The RNC is known to be a very clean, transparent, and more versatile compressor than the RNLA. FMR responded to a call for a more "colorful" compressor, and the RNLA is it. By changing the way the compressor behaves, The RNLA imparts a little character into the signal that some describe as "gooey". Great on vox. RNC is perhaps more versatile tho.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A great addition to my studio

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great, when it works and finally arrived
*by A***R on July 7, 2016*

This is a great compressor. But - I ordered it when it was shown as in stock and then waited quite a while for one to be built. From the first day I got it the unit puts off a horrible buzzing noise audible all the way out on the porch. This prevents operation and hitting the bypass button just made the noise different. No off switch is a big minus for me. Now I have to send back for repairs... BUT - when it is working properly this thing is amazing on bass guitars, vocals, and groups of instruments or groups of guitars. It can be very transparent while giving you 5-6 db of GR. I sometimes run my drum buss through this unit and squash the hell out of it and then blend that back in parallel like I would a VCA compressor - even sounds nice doing that!
