It could strengthen the surrounding light but the better effect depends on the backgound light. If you could fix a flashlight with it at nightl, it would have a better effect. **Q: It won't hold a charge** A: How do you know it won't hold a charge? It is not supposed to stay on when the car is off. The battery is there to allow it to properly shut down after power to the cigarette lighter is shut off.I have played with mine for about 30 minutes without it being plugged in without problems. However I only did this while initially setting it up. **Q: What class memory card do you recommend for the jse-cdr-157?** A: Suggest using above Class 6 tf card, better Class 10. **Q: Can you turn this to record the back seat?** A: This will record wherever you point it. It will turn on when power is on to cigarette lighter (generally when the car is turned on). I ACTUALLY DO! "UPDATED" *by L***E on Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2015* This is going back. Right out of the box this item looks used. The screen is scratched up, the lens has scratches all over it. There are finger prints all over the body of the camera. OMG...The User Manual!! Well, you'll need to get a magnifying glass to read it The type is so small it is utterly impossible to read and as a result, impossible to figure out how to get this thing started. I've sat here for 30 minutes trying to get it set up...like the time stamp function. I cannot get the date and time set. If the manual were readable it might be possible. The port is on top of the unit so the wire sticks straight up then has to go right then straight down to reach the charger, this creates a cluster**** and really interferes with seeing out the window. If the port was on the bottom or side, it would be much better so as to not have the wire in your line of vision. The screen is a nice size, and that's the most positive thing I can say about this. The fact that I can't read the manual makes it impossible to record and see the playback. There is no "OK" button to let you confirm you're setting up anything. I'm now an hour into this and still can't get the most simple function figured out. I'm done. It's going back....UPDATE: 5/17/15 After the seller sent me a .pdf version of the manual that one can actually read, I was able to figure out the basics, however, I had to play with it so much before discovering what buttons did what, along with emails from the seller giving me some help that now I like this thing. Playback is of great quality. The price shouldn't make you think the video will be inferior because it's not. I was quite surprised at the high quality. I didn't have audio, because I just figured out today the button to allow audio but I'm not sure it's necessary. The video speaks for itself. I'm hoping the hot Florida sun will not hurt this unit. Hopefully the manufacturer took that into consideration knowing users are keeping this in their vehicles and it gets hot in summer through out most of the country. Also, there WAS a protective film on the nice size screen, but the lens was scratched and it's too bad that lens is not black, it wouldn't be so obvious to the driver in front of you. Finally, this is a nice dashcam at a budget price. I would suggest they update the User Manual, it is completely useless. I would also update the way it's written, not just increase the size of the font. This seller was very helpful and that is just as important as the merchandise. BTW, YouTube has some helpful videos for setup and and how to use. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.0 out of 5 stars Satisfied with purchase. *by J***R on Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2015* Received the JSE CDR-157 dash cam Monday the 19th of Oct. 2015, these are my first impression's after 4 days of installation. First of all the instructions are almost useless, very small font and really does not go in detail on how to set this dash cam up, I did email the company to send me a PDF on line of the instruction booklet which they did right away. Like I said unless your are a technical wizard you'll have a hard time setting this with those instructions. What I did find out and what saved me from sending this back was some utude instruction videos on the G1 W Black Box model which is the same model as the JSE (JSE better buy because it comes with16GB memory card). These videos are very good and explain the different function's, then you can make a decision on the different set up options. Also when I opened the box the screen had some minor scratches on it with no plastic screen shield for protecting the screen. It comes with a nice long power cord that I was able to hide very well, I ran the cord towards the driver's side under the headliner to under rubber door strips down to under the dash over to the cigarette lighter outlet and this worked well with no wires visible. I decided to operate at 720 instead of 1080p just because of not using as much space on the memory card and files being smaller if you want to email, etc, of course everything is personal choice and there are many to choose from, just look at some of those video's they do help with personal choices. I did transfer some files to my lap- top with the included cord, I just took off the camera from the mounting bracket, be careful though sliding the camera off and on the mounting bracket looks like it could brake very easily. All and all I'm satisfied with the dash cam for the price paid you can't go wrong. ### ⭐⭐ 2.0 out of 5 stars Poor or non-existent users manual information, non-existent battery life. *by G***N on Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2015* Although the camera/DVR seemed to function as advertised, the owners manual accompanying the unit was a disgrace. Translated into English from who knows what Asian language, little if any of the descriptions made any sense. The manual provided no instructions on how to access and use any of the features, or explain what they were supposed to do, or provide suggestions on the best settings. Unless you are well versed in the concepts and operation of a dash cam, I recommend you find another manufacturer. The internal battery lasted less than 10 minutes before shutting down. I have 2 cars, so This is my second dash cam purchase, the first being from a different manufacturer. My first cam had understandable instructions and helpful information, as well as a battery that lasted over an hour.
